Drug Abuse Statistics in Wisconsin
The State of Wisconsin lies in the north-central United States. It is considered to be a part of the Midwest United States. Bordered on the west by Minnesota, southwest by Iowa, south by Illinois, east by Lake Michigan, and north by Lake Superior, Wisconsin comprises 72 counties. Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and Milwaukee is its largest city. According to the 2008 census, the population of Wisconsin is estimated at 5.6 million. The economy of Wisconsin is driven by health care, agriculture, and manufacturing. Often perceived as a farming state, Wisconsin has a gross state product of $240.4 billion. However, it is sad to note that drug addiction in Wisconsin has assumed greater proportions, with the ever-increasing numbers of drug addicts.
Drug abuse statistics in Wisconsin show that drug threat here varies by area. While the availability, distribution, and abuse of cocaine, both crack and powder forms, is a big headache for authorities, the easy availability and access to high purity heroin in the Milwaukee area is increasingly becoming a big threat. Marijuana is the most widely abused drug in the state, which is easily available, thanks to the rampant production in illicit plantations. However, of late, meth production is showing a decreasing trend. Meth is more popular in the western part of Wisconsin, particularly areas bordering Iowa and Minnesota. However, there are quite a large number of illicit meth labs that are producing this drug for sale among targeted groups.
International drug trafficking organizations are responsible for the poor drug situation in Wisconsin. These Mexican, Nigerian, and Dominican drug gangs are actively behind the transportation and distribution of drugs in the state. While cocaine, meth, and marijuana are mostly supplied by Mexican drug trafficking mafia, South-west Asian heroin is distributed by Nigerian criminal groups. These international drug gangs have been able to worsen the situation to a great extent, thanks to the loosely organized Hispanic and Afro-American street gangs that distribute most of these smuggled drugs on the streets of Wisconsin.
These organizations transport large drug consignments, concealed in private vehicles, from the southwest border to Milwaukee. While the international drug traffickers are wholesale distributors of drugs in the state, street gangs and local drug mafia are the retail distributors.
Of late, it has been found that heroin abuse has somewhat stabilized in the state. While most of the cases of heroin abuse are reported in Milwaukee and Racine, heroin trafficking cases are being increasingly reported in the Madison area. The higher levels of heroin purity make snorting of the drug possible, which makes the drug highly popular with young users, because they need not inject the same.
Club drugs and designer drugs, such as Ketamine, MDMA (ecstasy), GHB, LSD, are synthetic chemical drugs extremely popular with teenagers and adolescents. Besides, the abuse of prescription drugs continues to be a big problem in Wisconsin, thanks to the large number of adolescents who are abusing them. Ritalin, hydrocodone, oxycodone, OxyContin, vicodin are the most commonly diverted controlled substances in Wisconsin.
The state of Wisconsin has seen a rise in drug-related violent incidents. Gang migration from the Milwaukee region to other parts of the state has made the availability of drugs possible.
