The state of Virginia is known best   for the eight presidents that it has given to the nation. The state was among the first colonial settlements and also boasts of the country’s oldest legislature. It ranks 12th in the nation in terms of population and eighth in the income scales.

Virginia is mostly located along the Atlantic Coast. The Blue Ridge Mountains play a major role in the climate of the region. The state of Virginia has diverse flora and fauna and even cultural diversity is rich in the state. There is a fair mix of the north and the south even with the architecture in most of the state. Virginia also has a very good system of education in place, which is an achievement of the Virginia Department of Education.

Substance abuse in the state of Virginia, however, is as much of a problem as there is in the mid-Atlantic region. The amount of trafficking in this region also affects the state in terms of violent crime. The eastern hubs of drug activity in the United States, such as New York and Miami, also influence the drug culture in the state.

As such the Mexican DTOs are involved in drug trafficking here, large organizations and gangs having members from all races are also play a pivotal role in the drug racket in and around the state. The interstate 95 that runs through many cities in Virginia has witnessed the maximum drug smuggling traffic in the region. The most popular drugs sold in Virginia are cocaine, crack and marijuana.

Drug addiction in Virginia is a problem that affects many diverse people and cultures. Cocaine and crack are the most widely abused drugs along with marijuana. Marijuana abuse in the state has a lot to do with not just Mexican DTOs but also those operating from Canada.

Homegrown marijuana is also rampant in Virginia, as the cultivation of the plant is well fed by the climate too. Alcoholism and drug abuse in Virginia is also influenced by the nightclub culture, which is becoming highly popular, especially among teens and people below the age of 25.

Many synthetic drugs like MDMA, GHB, and PCP are also popular in the state. The rise of such drugs also collectively known as party and club drugs has been a major concern for the administration. MDMA is the more widely available drug which is also abused in other forms outside the club scene.

The rise of MDMA was fuelled in the recent past because of the many clandestine labs that flourished in the state and took advantage of regulations. The existence of Mexican trafficking for these drugs has also been checked to a great extent. LSD is also a popular drug in this category and of late has seen more teens taking to it.

Cocaine and crack are the most significant drug threats in the state. Substance abuse in Virginia has been fuelled by retail and wholesale dealing of these drugs. Cocaine and crack are also associated with violent crime rates in Virginia, as there are frequent clashes between DTOs which leads to gang related violence.

The rise of violent crime has been accredited mostly due to the cocaine supply related issues. Apart from Mexican organizations, Colombian and Dominican drug trafficking organizations have been known to operate in Virginia as well. Of late though, there have been major inroads in the situation from both state and central enforcement agencies. This has affected users, as the prices of cocaine have gone up. This is also an indication of the success of the state and central organizations.

Prescription drug addiction in Virginia is also prominent and has remained under the watchful eye of the enforcement agencies for a long time. Drug abuse statistics in Virginia have also indicated that there are more adult users of these drugs. These drugs are mostly abused by working class people who even use illegal methods to acquire fake prescriptions. The distribution of these drugs in handled largely by the many health care professionals who make huge profits from such forms of trafficking.

Alcoholism and drug addiction in Virginia go hand in hand to a great extent. Recent studies have shown that the state has a large number of alcoholics who need as much care as addicts. The increase has been seen mostly among teens, which is also a major concern.

Many DUIs have been reported where the driver was under the influence of more than just alcohol. Mixing alcohol with cocaine, marijuana and even MDMA has been observed which can, in some cases, even prove fatal. The rise in the number of teen drinkers has also caused a stir within the Department of Education, which is known to have a good system in place.

There have been a lot of initiatives from different quarters to help fight the problems regarding alcoholism and drug addiction in Virginia. The increase in recent supplies of drugs like heroin and cocaine has also been noted, and steps are being taken to counter this.
