Alcoholism and drug addiction in Vermont
The state of Vermont is in the northeastern corner of the nation and occupies an area of 9250 square miles. The state of Vermont stands 43rd by population and 45th by land area. It is well known for Lake Champlain, which spans across the western border of the state.
The state shares its borders with the Canadian city of Québec to the north. It joined the United States in 1791, before which it existed as an independent region with its own sovereign government. The state is nicknamed the Green Mountain State, and the capital city of the state is among the smallest capitals in the nation.
Substance abuse in Vermont is a well-known and widespread problem, as many drugs are easily available throughout the state. As such, marijuana is the most widely available illicit substance. Large quantities of Canadian, Mexican, and domestic marijuana are available in the state. The problem of marijuana is very common throughout the state. There are many people across all age groups who get involved in the recreational usage of marijuana.
The drug abuse statistics in Vermont indicate that there are as many as 23% of the population who regularly use marijuana. Figures for marijuana usage in some areas go as high as 42% of all of the adult population. Marijuana is not a drastically harmful drug, but it has slow effects on the mind of the consumer. Long-term consumption is also likely to lead a person into more serious drug afflictions.
High quality heroin and cocaine are also available in most areas in the state. Drug abuse statistics in Vermont indicate that cocaine is the most widely abused of all drugs. Cocaine is supplied by many drug trafficking organizations and even groups and gangs within the state.
The nearby cities of New York and Massachusetts are the key sources for drug supplies. The distribution of cocaine and crack has also picked up over the last couple of years. Substance abuse in Vermont is not restricted by any class barriers, as cheaper drugs are also available.
There are many types and sources of heroin available in the state. A high grade of heroin is usually on offer, which is a cause for concern for the Drug Enforcement Agency. The DEA, along with the respective state administration, has taken many steps to curb and counter alcoholism and drug addiction in Vermont.
In many areas, free availability of drugs refuses to go down. Heroin distributors are themselves mostly regular users who have to depend on the drug and sell it. Road transport in passenger vehicles is the most common mode of bringing in supplies of heroin into the state from nearby cities.
Meth is another dangerous drug that the state is dealing with. The rise in the supply of meth is mostly due to the setting up of some meth labs in some sparsely populated areas of the state. Drug abuse statistics in Vermont do not show a picture of what is going on in the present in terms of meth use. The alarming rise in supplies over the last couple of years has gone unnoticed so far. Meth is also one of the deadliest drugs in terms of the damage done to the user. There are many new users of meth in the age group of 18-21 years. People aged 15-25 years have shown high tendencies toward meth use.
Other than these mainstream drugs, there are group of other drugs that are also highly popular in terms of the availability at certain occasions. Party and club drugs are widely available in Vermont. There are many sources of such drugs that range between LSD, GHB, PCP and MDMA.
MDMA or ecstasy has also increased in supply and consumption post 2005, as many new users are added to the party scene each year. The seizure of meth labs is also a development that shows increase in substance abuse in Vermont, which is a result of an increase in supplies of methamphetamines in the state. The rising meth problem is also somewhat similar to the rise of these classes of drugs, also commonly known as ODD or Other Dangerous Drugs.
Diverted pharmaceutical drugs are also widely abused in the state of Vermont. These drugs include Codeine, OxyContin, and Diazepam which are the most common. There are many instances of corrupt healthcare practitioners caught supplying drugs to the common population. This form of neo-trafficking is certainly as bad and should be reprimanded sufficiently to deter people from going towards it.
There are also many cases of accidental dependence on prescribed drugs. Some strong drugs also invoke such reactions. This makes the introduction of drug awareness programs a very high priority to fight alcoholism and drug addiction in Vermont.
As already mentioned, in order to fight drug addiction in Vermont, the deployment of awareness programs to help identify risk behaviors and symptoms of drug afflictions in individuals is very crucial. The early detection of a user’s affliction can counsel the person suffering from potential or severe addiction.
It is also important that the users are not treated too harshly, as it can cause alienation and depression. This is known to be the single greatest cause of drug relapses. It is important to make users feel at home on their road to recovery.
Drug abuse statistics in Vermont have shown a rising trend in the past 5 years. There was a time when the enforcement agencies made many successful seizures and had managed to curb supplies. The deployment of teams has brought about a buzz in the air again.
However, real success will truly come about when the mafia and drug organizations are forced out of the picture, as they continue to be the number one source of drug supplies. The collective need to fight against drug addiction in Vermont is also very important and should be taken seriously.
