Texas Narcotic Abuse Statistics
Texas is the second largest state in the United States of America after Alaska and covers an area of 268,820 sq miles along the U.S./Mexico border in the southern part of the United States.
Comprising plains, valleys, deserts and many rivers, this state has a varied climate throughout the year. The state of Texas is surrounded by the Rio Grande, the Red River, and the Sabine River, all of which create borders with Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mexico.
Texas is called the Lone Star State as a remembrance of its battles with Mexico and is also well known for its cattle and vast open spaces, which is why the cowboy is often a symbol of Texas Due to the fact that Texas shares an extensive border with Mexico, its ports are used as point of entries into the USA. It also has become a victim state in America’s drug war against the Mexican cartel.
Substance abuse in TX Regions:
In Texas, the regions are split up in divisions by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a way of recognizing each area. The Dallas section covers 121 counties in north Texas. The northern Dallas/Fort Worth region is the main area used for the shipping and movement of drugs. It is mainly the Mexican drug trafficking rings that are involved in the movement of these drugs. They smuggle meth, cocaine, heroin, and weed to the northern region of Texas. From here, it is moved to areas in the east, south, and west areas of the country to be sold.
The north region is positioned in the perfect location for drug trafficking, because it is close to the border of Mexico. The Houston area is also in a prime location for trafficking as there is access to many modes of transportation there. The Mexican, Colombian, and Dominican gangs are mostly responsible for drug movement throughout this region.
Warehouses for drugs are commonly found in the north as well. Sometimes, the traffickers use public transportation like buses, planes, and trains to move their drugs. The government in Mexico is currently building a highway consisting of four lanes called "La Entrada al Pacifico". This highway will be a main trade route coming in from port cities such as Sinaloa in Mexico and via Presidio, Texas.
Presidio is a Texas entry point and will connect major highways such as Interstate 10, 20 and 40 to the port cities in Mexico. This also means more drugs are being moved through the state of Texas.
West Texas mostly consists of the El Paso region. This area has 54 counties, including some shared by New Mexico, while 40% is located within the Mexican border. This region is monitored by 133 agents who cover 20 entry points, immigration check points, and other known illegal crossing points.
El Paso and its sister city of Juarez in Mexico make up the biggest metro space along the entire Mexican border. There are at least 2 million residents in the El Paso area. NAFTA made a significant difference in the trade agreement between El Paso and Juarez. With free trade offered by NAFTA, there was an increase in merchants coming and going between the two cities. This made it possible for drug traffickers to move more drugs undetected.
Other areas in Texas such as the desert, farmland, and river areas along the U.S./Mexico border gave traffickers even more opportunity for drug movement.
The Texas/Mexico border is like a giant path for drugs coming into the country. Traffickers move major quantities of cocaine and cannabis through entry points and travel along highways that pass through northern Texas. The highways connect to all major highways in the U.S. at some point. This allows for distribution throughout the country.
Drug abuse statistics in Texas:
Cocaine- This drug is transported mainly to northern Texas in both private and public vehicles. Houston is also a prime location for cocaine shipments. Large quantities are often shipped by trailers carrying legit goods. Small quantities are delivered more by private vehicles or airplanes. Availability of cocaine is high in the northern region and is a major drug of choice for users.
Crack- This drug is very popular in Dallas/Fort Worth, as well as the Houston area. It is low in cost and can be easily attained. Crack is often distributed from the northern region in Texas to other areas in the country and is made from powder cocaine within the city.
Local gangs and dealers sell crack in all areas surrounding the I-10 highway in Texas. Parts of middle Texas have crack distribution and abuse rates that are extremely high. It is a major threat to the local communities, and so, authorities focus more of their attention to this area.
Other drugs common in Texas are Mexican black tar heroin, crystal meth, pharmaceuticals, and marijuana.
