Tallahassee Drug Abuse Statistics

Tallahassee is not only the county seat of Leon County, but the city is also the capital of Florida. Needless to say, this makes the city very important and the large population of 357,259 that the metropolitan statistical area hosts is the proof of the cities popularity. Of course with all this development and metro city feel, also comes a high level of crime. The rate of forcible rape in the city is 2.70 times the national average; burglary is 1.6 times the national average while violent crimes are 1.50 times the national average. The statistics speak for themselves. Most of these crimes find their roots in drugs.

When it comes to drugs, Tallahassee faces the problem of illegal drugs as well as prescription ones. Illegal drugs like cocaine, marijuana and even Methamphetamine are commonly used in Tallahassee. However, it is the production of Methamphetamine in the small laboratories of the city that is causing concern amongst the authorities. Club drugs like Ecstasy, GHB, LSD and even Rohypnol are found rather easily in the night clubs, which are dime a dozen in Tallahassee.

These drugs seem to be very common with the younger generation and an alarming 36.1% of the students of Leon County High School claimed to have used marijuana once in their life. While crack was used by only 0.9% of them, 8.8% had tired inhalants. Over 40% had used some or the other illicit drug at least once. Shockingly the average age of the first time marijuana user was only 14.2 years.

These statistics shook the Tallahassee authorities, who decided to move into action by launching 490 full-time laws enforcement employees in the year 2006. Apart from looking towards controlling the drug traffic operations in the city, these Tallahassee enforcers were also hoping to seek treatment for as many addicts as possible. Since the year 2006 saw 18 deaths where cocaine was found in the body, the drug was a huge cause for concern. It had killed the maximum number of people that year when compared with other drugs such as hydrocodone, Alprazolam, Heroin and all other illicit drugs.

While hospitals only served as treatments for emergency cases, the true and long lasting treatment plan came from the rehabs of the Tallahassee region. The rehabs here have proved to be very effective in not only treating their patients but also keeping the relapse rate low. Due to the easy availability of drugs in this region, relapses were very common. Now with the authorities as the rehabs working hand in hand, the problem is significantly under control.

In the year 2007 there were 779 arrests related to drugs. While this was a significant drop from the 1,827 arrests made the previous year, the figures still need to be controlled further. In the case of DUI arrests too, there has been a drop from 1,572 in the year 2006 to only 184 in 2007. Apparently, the authorities and the rehabs seem to have hit the right formula when it comes to controlling the drug situation in Tallahassee.

Many Florida rehabs offer treatment programs that are highly effective, please call 866-211-5538 and speak with an expert who can help you and you family overcome an alcohol or drug problem.
