Substance abuse statistics for South Dakota, United States

Located in the Midwestern region of United States, state of South Dakota was named after Dakota American Sioux and Lakota tribes. It became a state in the year 1889. Bordered by Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa, South Dakota is served by interstate 90, often used by drug trafficking organizations for the transportation of drugs. Large consignments of drugs find their way to South Dakota through southwest border, California, Colorado and Washington.

Increasing availability of cocaine throughout South Dakota has been a major problem for the authorities. Recent drug busts indicate that cocaine has been available in almost all parts of the state of South Dakota, United States. Larger cities were more affected by cocaine abuse while suburban parts were known to have meth as an alternative to cocaine.

Heroin is not available in larger quantities in South Dakota but a number of people have been arrested in recent past in connection with illegal drug possession. When large consignments of pot, meth and cocaine were seized, smaller quantities of heroin were also found by the police authorities. Law enforcement officers believe that most of the heroin in South Dakota finds its way through neighboring states and there are very few drug distribution channels that deliver the drug directly to drug consumers.

Methamphetamine continues to be a serious problem for the authorities of South Dakota. Meth is mostly used as a cheaper alternative to expensive drugs like cocaine and its variant known as crack cocaine. This drug has been the most rampant hard-core drug all over United States. This was majorly because of the easy production processes associated with the manufacturing of crystalline methamphetamine and easy availability of the raw material. Police authorities did their best to check the trafficking of meth across the borders but it only lead to the production of meth within the states. Demand for crystal meth has increased over the years and drug abuse statistics also suggest the same.

Meth contributes a lot to the overall drug abuse statistics for South Dakota, United States. Meth has become popular among the youth population despite the fact that media has done its best to prevent this popularity. A number of nonprofit organizations have been doing their best to spread awareness on meth abuse prevention but the results are far from expectations. Today’s generation needs entirely different treatment to be convinced of the evil effects of hard-core drugs like meth, cocaine and heroin. Fear based propaganda may not work in today’s date and that is something that all sorts of nonprofit organizations and campaign managers need to understand. Need of the hour is to look at the psychological triggers causing drug addiction and primary points where drug abuse begins. Only when the roots of the problem are visible to the eyes, one can begin on eradicating drug abuse.

Only after the worst has happened, youngsters realize how far they have gone into the dark. Recovering oneself to a normal life after a prolonged addiction problem is a challenging task and when the drugs concerned are like meth and cocaine, it becomes even harder to restore normalcy. Cocaine and heroin are drugs that make a person physically and mentally dependent on their presence. Nearly 15000 or 2.32 percent of South Dakota’s population was reportedly depended on a drug of some form according to a recent drug abuse statistics report.

Without consumption of cocaine and heroin, an addict is bound to behave abnormally or act immorally in public. Addict can also resort to commit crimes such as robberies, violence or kidnapping to get access to drugs or money.

Marijuana has been readily available throughout the state of South Dakota and its popularity is highest among the youth population. Nearly 40 percent of citizens in the state of South Dakota believed that using a substance like marijuana on occasional basis was a great risk. Marijuana is highly addictive drug but it’s less harmful as compared to hard core substances like meth, heroin, cocaine etc. What is heartening is the fact that minors as young as 12 to 15 years have been consuming harmful substances like marijuana at least once a month. Nearly 5 % of 9th to 12th grade students in the state of South Dakota have reportedly confessed of having tried marijuana on school property in last one month. These facts are nothing short of alarm bells that should make school management bodies and parents more alert than ever.

According to a recent survey in the state of South Dakota, nearly 21 % of all students surveyed, reported that someone had sold or offered them an illegal drug on school property within last one year. These survey results highlight the bitter realities that continue to exist despite the tall claims from authorities. However, one should also understand that eradication of drug abuse is not a responsibility of the state authorities alone. No matter how many agencies are engaged in the process, curbing drug abuse in any form is not possible without public support. It is simply impossible to keep an eye on all corners of the state of South Dakota. Drug addiction in South Dakota, United States will no more be a rampant problem if citizens pledge to support drug prevention at all levels. Starting from one’s own family, a parent has to educate oneself on the subject of drug prevention first of all. An educator has to learn about all possible indicators of drug abuse so as to detect drug abuse on school property.

Unlike other states, club drugs are not much of a problem in the state of South Dakota. MDMA contributes a little to the substance abuse statistics for South Dakota, United States. In recent years, popularity of club drugs like ecstasy pills have increased a little but the overall figures are well below threshold. As compared to cocaine, marijuana and meth related statistics, numbers of drug addiction cases concerning MDMA and LSD are very small. Law enforcement officers also report limited availability of drugs like LSD and MDMA in the state of South Dakota.
