Christian Drug Treatment Centers Can Help You Fight Addiction to Ritalin

Methylphenidate is the generic name for Ritalin, a mild central nervous system stimulant used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy (uncontrollable desire to sleep). Ritalin affects the chemicals in the human brain and the nerves that contribute to hyperactive behavior and impulse control. When used to treat ADHD, Ritalin should be a major portion of a total treatment program that also includes educational, social and psychological measures. Ritalin may be used for other medical conditions as determined by a physician.

Ritalin is such an addictive medication; the United States Drug Enforcement Agency has placed it as a Schedule II drug, with tight control on manufacturing, distribution and prescriptions to control Ritalin addiction. Substance abusers who use Ritalin may crush the tablet and snort the powder or mix it with water and “cook” the drug for intravenous injection. Street names for the drug include; kibbles and bits, speed, west coast, r-ball, vitamin R, smart drug or kiddie cocaine.

Ritalin is highly addictive and should only be used by the person it was prescribed for and never shared with another person or given to someone who has a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Ritalin addiction is a serious issue and should be treated at a skilled rehabilitation center for Ritalin.

If hives, breathing problems, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat occur, it could indicate a serious allergic reaction to Ritalin which requires immediate medical attention. Discontinue taking Ritalin and contact a physician at once if you have any of the following side effect, fast or uneven heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sore throat, headache, aggression, restlessness, hallucinations, unusual behavior, muscle twitching, extremely high blood pressure, blurry vision, chest pain or shortness of breath.

There is a risk of addiction with Ritalin, as a person becomes tolerant and the addiction grows, the Ritalin withdrawal symptoms will vary in severity depending upon several factors. Common Ritalin withdrawal symptoms include, but are not limited to the following; insomnia, agitation, nausea, insomnia, severe depression, irritability, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, exhaustion, abdominal cramping and gastrointestinal upset. For monitoring and controlling the side effects that come from Ritalin withdrawal, a person should be treated for the addiction at a drug rehab facility for Ritalin addicts.

A person can also experience an overdose with Ritalin when taking the drug in excessive doses. Symptoms of a Ritalin overdose include vomiting, tremors and shaking, muscle twitching, agitation, convulsions which may be followed by a coma, confusion, delirium, profuse sweating, headache, facial flushing, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias and drying out of mucous membranes. If a person has taken excessive amounts of Ritalin and experienced an overdose, it may be an indication of a serious addiction problem. An evaluation from skilled Christian drug treatment centers can help distinguish if further treatment is warranted.

Ritalin rehab will include a personalized treatment plan tailored to meet the needs of the patient. An addict may need to complete a period of detoxification prior to entering a rehabilitation center for Ritalin. Once detoxification has been completed at a Christian drug rehab center , a person will receive medical attention, guidance from a team of rehab specialists, counseling, therapy and ongoing support to facilitate the recovery process.
