Methylphenidate is the generic name for Ritalin, a mild central nervous system stimulant used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy (uncontrollable desire to sleep). Ritalin affects the chemicals in the human brain and the nerves that contribute to hyperactive behavior and impulse control.
