Treatment For Oxycontin Addiction is Available At Drug Rehab Centers

Oxycontin is an opioid medication used as an analgesic for the control of severe and chronic pain. Currently, the drug is the main active ingredient in a large number of oral medications used to treat chronic pain conditions. Oxycontin can be combined with acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen and the drug is notable for its sales. Oxycontin continues to be the subject of ongoing debate in the medical community with concern growing over its patent status, marketing, potential for dangerous use and abuse potential.

Oxycontin is a narcotic painkilling drug, and contains Oxycodone, which is made from a synthetic form of morphine. The drug is highly addictive and emotionally crippling. A person with an Oxycontin addiction will oftentimes crush up and snort the medication to increase the “high” feeling experienced. Crushing and snorting the drug is also what leads to a greater risk of developing an addiction, as well as increases the risk of overdose. The only way a person is likely to overcome Oxycontin addiction is through the help of an Oxycontin rehab facility.

At times, a person with an Oxycontin addiction will deny the addiction because of the misconception associated with the drug being prescribed. Many people with this type of addiction are unable to accept the magnitude of the problem. Before long, a person with an addiction may find themselves comparing the situation to an addict using street drugs, begin taking the medication outside the prescribed amounts and developing a very serious addiction to Oxycontin. With time, the initial dose is no longer sufficient and a person is driven to take more and more of the drug, at times when the behavior becomes uncontrollable, a person may delve into illegal means to obtain more of the drug. These signs all indicate a serious addiction that requires the intervention and skills of experts working at rehab treatment centers for oxycontin addicts.

The effects of an Oxycontin addiction are very serious, and can be quite dramatic. While there are those people who can tolerate and resist the urge to abuse Oxycontin, there are those with a high propensity to develop an addiction to the drug. An addiction to Oxycontin takes its toll on a person mentally, emotionally and physically. When Oxycontin is taken for pain management, there is a good chance the user may be experiencing depression as well. Depression can be accompanied by isolation, loneliness, anger and fear. Taking Oxycontin makes a person feel better and relieves the pain, but the drug becomes sort of a crutch, allowing the person to become numb to the feelings of depression. As the use of Oxycontin increases, a user may experience a number of negative effects associated with an addiction. If a person wishes to stop abusing Oxycontin or get rid of oxycodone withdrawal symptoms, treatment is available at rehab centers for Oxycontin addiction.
