Drug Addiction Statistics in Oregon
The state of Oregon lies in the Pacific Northwest region. Bordering the Pacific Ocean, Oregon is also bordered by Washington in the north, California in the south, and Nevada and Idaho on the southeast and east, respectively. Salem, the third most populous city in Oregon, is the capital. Portland is the largest and most populous city in Oregon followed by Salem and Eugene.
With 3.8 million inhabitants, Oregon is home to a number of big corporate houses, such as Intel. It has a diverse landscape and its climate is highly influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Oregon is one of the richest U.S. states. However, there is a different angle to this rosy picture. The drug abuse statistics in Oregon clearly point toward the increasing numbers of drug addicts.
Oregon serves as the transshipment point for the drug consignments to Washington and Canada, coming from Mexico. Oregon serves as the drug transit route to not only Washington and Canada, but also Montana, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, and various other U.S. locations. The widespread drug trafficking network is run by Mexican and Caucasian drug mafias, which dominate the illicit drug trade in the state of Oregon. Mexican trafficking organizations are primary distributors of Mexican black tar and brown heroin, whereas the Caucasian drug trafficking groups control the shipment and distribution of marijuana in the state.
Meth poses the biggest threat to Oregon and is widely available throughout the state. The indoor production of meth in illicit laboratories has contributed significantly to the growing numbers of drug addicts. In 2006, meth abuse led to 90 deaths in Oregon, which was the highest number of drug casualties that year. Recent meth seizures show that powder methamphetamine has lost its appeal and is now replaced by its more addictive and potent form, known as ice or crystal.
Marijuana, too, poses a grave threat to Oregon, with drug peddlers running a large number of indoor and outdoor meth growing operations in the state. This is evident from the numerous seizures of indoor and outdoor meth growing operations on private, state, and forest lands. Mexican drug trafficking organizations control most of these marijuana growing operations. These organizations are actively cultivating cannabis in isolated areas, illegally growing thousands of plants annually.
Marijuana abuse, cultivation, and trafficking are pose a significant threat to Oregon. To some extent, the widespread abuse of marijuana can also be blamed on the Medical Marijuana Act, which came into effect recently and provides legal protection for anybody in possession of marijuana for medical purposes. During 2007, the law enforcement agencies seized 875.2 kg of marijuana in the state.
Besides marijuana and meth, heroin, cocaine, and club drugs are quite popular in Oregon. Powder cocaine is more widely abused than crack cocaine in Oregon. While Mexican drug trafficking organizations control the wholesale distribution, transportation of cocaine from Mexico, California, the retail quantities are primarily sold by local criminals, street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and local independent drug dealers.
In 2007, methamphetamine and cocaine prices almost doubled in the state, thanks to enforcement operations throughout the United States and Mexico. In 2008, the law enforcement agencies seized more than 70,214.2 kg of marijuana, 123.3 kg of cocaine, 34.0 kg of meth, 6.7 kg of heroin, and 21 meth labs. These anti-drug operations disrupted the supply of drugs to a great extent.
However, the drug trafficking network has made deep inroads into the state of Oregon and police efforts however efficient seem trivial. Marijuana and MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, are smuggled from Canada into Oregon and other U.S. locations. The rising incidence of drug addiction in Oregon is evident from the fact that, in 2008, 17,352 cases of drug abuse violation were reported here.
Numerous legislative acts have been passed to reduce the availability of meth, which is a controlled substance. In 2006, several products that were used in the manufacturing of meth became Schedule III controlled substances, thus becoming available only by prescription. Only licensed pharmacies can now sell ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which became Schedule III controlled substances after the 2006 legislation. Apart from this, these pharmacies must maintain a record of each and every purchase transaction.
Apart from these controlled substances, MDMA, GHB, Ketamine, and LSD are highly popular in the state. These club drugs are widely abused at social venues and on college campuses. MDMA is shipped into Oregon from Canada, GHB and LSD from California, and Ketamine from Mexico. There have been some lab seizures where GHB and LSD were being locally produced in the state. PCP and Psilocybin mushrooms are quite popular with the college student population.
Even prescription drug abuse contributes to the growing drug abuse statistics in Oregon. Another more upsetting fact associated with it is that numerous cases of medicated drug abuse involve teens. The easy availability of prescription drugs has made the drug situation grim in the state. In fact, prescription drug abuse is highly popular throughout the United States. These medicated drugs are the second most forms of drugs abused by the youth. Illegal dispensation and prescription is the primary reason for the widespread availability or diversion of pharmaceutical drugs. Illegal distribution by pharmacists, prescription forgery, theft at pharmacies and hospitals also contribute significantly to this state. The abuse of Oxycodone, primarily OxyContin® and Percocet, hydrocodone, Methadone, and anabolic steroids is a great cause for concern in Oregon.
In 1995, DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams were formed throughout the country in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violence. The state law enforcement agencies in collaboration with Seattle MET are working in this regard in Portland, Woodburn, Klamath Falls, Keiser, etc.
The overwhelming situation of substance abuse in Oregon demands immediate attention from law enforcement agencies, administration, and responsible citizens of the state. Raising awareness about addiction and its impact on health and wealth is of utmost importance. Parents, guardians, and teachers should take over the responsibility to raise drug awareness among teens and adolescents so that they refrain from taking to drugs or even alcohol.
