North Carolina Drug Abuse Statistics
The state of North Carolina has approximately 8 million occupants. There was an increase in this number (21%) over a period of 10 years (1990-2000). This growth was larger than that of the national level. This was mostly due to the economy which did very well in the early 90's.
Large cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh were affected with this growth the most. Farming and other industries opened up many job opportunities. Statistics report that the population consists of many races, with Caucasian being the largest at 72.1%. African Americans come in second at 21.6%.
Many occupants migrated to North Carolina for work in the farming industry. Others had a different agenda as they were sent as drug traffickers by criminal organizations. North Carolina has a terrain consisting of many rural areas. This makes it easy for the concealment of drug trafficking by criminal organizations.
According to authorities, meth is made in labs that are hidden in mountain areas around the west and central parts of NC. The woods in Nantahala forests and Pisgah make it easy to conceal the growth of marijuana.
Drug traffickers use their own vehicles as well as public buses, railways and airplanes to bring drugs into North Carolina. Organizations transporting drugs are found on highways in and around the state. They use these highways as a distribution system within the state, as well as hubs leading to other states.
I-95 can be accessed from Miami to as far as Maine. I-40 runs from south NC and travels all the way to California. Other interstates such as 85, 77 and 65 also run throughout North Carolina.
Drug abuse statistics in North Carolina report a large percentage of drug busts in 2000 happened on interstate 95 in North Carolina. These busts were vehicles headed for other states above and below North Carolina. Mexican crime groups and motorcycle gangs are often the culprits behind these drug trafficking rings. They hide the drugs in various secret compartments in their vehicles.
Many large supplies of drugs are sent by commercial trailers carrying merchandise from Mexico. Mexican shipments of merchandise to North Carolina were equal to 553,742 tons in 2000. Mexican organizations are the major source for drug trafficking in North Carolina. They bring in the largest volumes of cocaine and cannabis into the state.
Additionally, meth and heroin are commonly transported in small amounts. Authorities report that these organizations are located in Mexico and in the southern states. Illegal immigrants from Mexico are used in North Carolina as drug mules (carriers). It is the large number of Mexican immigrants in NC that allow operators to go about their business.
Mexican crime organizations have begun to tread on African American drug territories in NC. This causes major drug wars among gangs and criminal groups in the state. Drug enforcement agencies report that there are also a large number of Asian gangs in Greensboro and Charlotte. Gang members distribute cocaine and heroin to residents at retail prices and are typically most active in urban spaces.
Cocaine is commonly found in North Carolina. Generally found in the form of crack, this drug causes a big issue to local society. Crack is often the reason behind criminal activities and drug addiction in North Carolina. Large quantities are very accessible in NC. In fact, the amount of individuals admitted for treatment of cocaine in NC rose 21% in 3 years (96-99).
Deaths related to the use of cocaine went up 12% in almost the same time. The cocaine comes in mostly from southern states and Mexico. It is brought by package services and other public transit systems. Most transporters are found to be Mexican, but also other Hispanics, Caucasians, and motorcycle groups, who transport cocaine into NC. Mexican organizations are the largest distributors in the state.
African American groups are the largest sellers of crack in the state. The use of crack in North Carolina is at par with the national figures. In 1999, there were 1.7% of people who reported crack use nationally as compared to 1.9% in NC. Crack treatment admissions rose 21% from 1996-1999. These numbers were higher than admissions for any other drug at that time.
Crack is used by many individuals in North Carolina. Its cost is fairly low and the drug is very addictive. There was a rise in cocaine related deaths- i.e. 12% in 1 year (1999-2000). Cocaine was responsible for 32% of deaths related to drugs in the state (1999).
The most common North Carolina substance abuse drug which is highly accessible in the state is marijuana. Marijuana use is used by all age groups and grown outdoors in many places throughout the state. There is a limited amount of growth that occurs indoors though.
Mexican crime rings are the largest source of wholesale marijuana in the state. Marijuana is transported in trailers carrying goods from Mexico. Other groups like Jamaicans and motorcycle gangs also transport marijuana in the state. Wholesale distribution also occurs from cultivation within the state too. Drugs are distributed by African Americans, Caucasians, and Hispanics on a retail level to people from all walks of life.
Reports indicate that 4.7% of NC occupants claimed to have used marijuana within a month. This number was equal to the amount for the entire nation. The use was reportedly higher among adolescents. Ages 18-25 had a 14% use, while ages 12-17 had 6.8%. Those aged 26 and up made up 3.1% of marijuana users. Treatments into rehab facilities for marijuana use rose 70% during the years 1996-1999.Thisreport came from the North Carolina Department of Health.
The growth of marijuana is huge in North Carolina. In Chatham County, there were over 23,000 marijuana plants discovered at a cultivation site in 2001. It was the greatest seizure of weed in North Carolina to date.
More adolescents were arrested for marijuana charges between 1994-1999. This shows a significant need for awareness about North Carolina drug abuse statistics among the youth. Awareness can only come from parents and community support.
