Drug Abuse Statistics in New York
New York is one of the most exciting states in the United States, with a lively atmosphere, literary events, music, celebrities, restaurants, fashion, and business. Heroin, cocaine, marijuana are the most widely abused and trafficked drugs in the New York area. Besides, club drugs, such as Ecstasy, and meth are other widely abused drugs in the state. However, heroin and cocaine top the list of most abused drugs in New York. Heroin is becoming popular even with the younger generation in New York, which has started the rampant use of this contraband substance. The young adults, particularly those in rural areas, have developed a special liking for this drug. This is evident from the increasing number of admissions for heroin abuse in New York. Cocaine also remains a popular drug of abuse in the state, much like other states of the United States. Marijuana is another popular drug in New York. Two forms of marijuana, that is, Mexican marijuana smuggled from the Southwest border and potent hydroponic marijuana from Canada, are quite popular in the New York area. Marijuana is also illegally grown in plantations in some parts of the state, many of which have been seized by the police and the Drug Enforcement Administration, especially Long Island and Queens. Though methamphetamine does not pose much of a problem to this area compared to the rest of the United States, its use is increasing for the past couple of years. This is evident from the seizure of a few meth labs in some of the New York cities.
Apart from these contraband substances, prescription drugs are also topping the list of abuse in New York. Prescription drugs are being widely abused by teens and young adults, who are easily able to avail these, either at their homes or at pharmacies. The police, law enforcement, and Drug Enforcement Administration are playing a vital role in checking the menace of drug trafficking in the state of New York and its surroundings. Several of the attempts of these law enforcement bodies have paid off well; however, these efforts always seem futile seeing the rampant alcoholism and drug addiction New York. Police patrol teams regularly patrol the national highways and interstate ways to prevent any illegal drug consignment from entering the state. Apart from the law enforcement agencies and government, responsible citizens of New York must play a role in checking the growing menace of drug trafficking and addiction. They should report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood to the police. They should also actively participate in drug awareness programs to raise awareness about the repercussions of drug use among young adults, teenagers, and even adults. This awareness program should originate from their homes and they should first educate their kids in this regard so that they do not take to drugs.
Drug or alcohol rehab centers in New York are playing an important role in checking the growth of the incidence of substance abuse. These rehab centers offer a number of treatment options for addicts to choose from. Outpatient program, inpatient program, 12-step recovery program, Christian rehab program are some of the prevalent drug treatment programs in the state. The process of drug therapy begins with detoxification and culminates in the complete eradication of the addiction symptoms, physical as well as mental.
Drug education is extremely necessary to bring down the incidence of drug addiction in New York or for that matter anywhere in the United States or even the globe. When people begin to realize that life is much better without a needle or a crack pipe, they will secure their future as well as that of their loved ones and even the entire country.
