Substance abuse statistics for Montana, United States
Located in the western part of United States, Montana consists of several noted mountain ranges. With a land area of 145552 square miles, Montana has around 77 popular mountain ranges. The name ‘Montana’ has Spanish origin that means ‘mountains’. The state of Montana has got a number of nicknames including ‘The Treasure State’, ‘The Last Best Place’, ‘Land of Shining Mountains’ and ‘Big Sky Country.’ Montana is forth largest state in United States but it ranks 44th in population. It has got very low population density with rank 3 in United States. Major cities in Montana include Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Kalispell, Missoula and Great Falls.
State has relatively higher narcotics abuse statistics as compared to national averages. Binge drinking and marijuana smoking are two most popular illegal substance abuse activities among Montana’s youth population. More than 18 thousand students in 9th to 12th grade confessed of binge drinking in last one month. Drug addiction in Montana has been increasing phenomenally for past several years with no serious harm but increased popularity of hard core drugs deserves immediate attention from the authorities.
Meth is number one contributor to high number of drug abuse cases in Montana, United States. Among all other illicit substances, popularity of ecstasy pills or MDMA among the young generation is also becoming a serious problem. Cocaine and marijuana are much too common among regular drug users who consume prescription drugs and other illicit substances to satisfy their cravings for instant high or euphoric effects. Overall numbers of prescription drug abuse cases in Montana are not very high as compared to other states. Around four million people in United States are estimated to abuse prescription medications for non-medicinal purposes. Compared to these figures, stats for Montana are far below the safety levels.
Meth is the most serious problem in wiping out Montana drug abuse and law enforcement officers also agree with this fact. Vast popularity of meth among the Montana population is due to its easy availability. Methamphetamine or meth can be easily manufactured in small plants by using simple equipment and easily available raw material. Problems faced by law enforcement officers in curbing meth abuse are manifold because raw material used in its production is actually harmless and sold over the counter for generic uses in homes, offices etc.
Heroin is one exception that happens to be a lot less popular in the state of Montana. This is partly due to the low availability of the drug in Montana area. Few cases of heroin possession and trafficking were reported in last 3-4 years but the numbers are significantly small as compared to cocaine and meth. Black tar heroin is fast becoming popular in the western part of the state. Missoula city in Montana has witnessed a steady growth in number of reported cases pertaining to heroin abuse.
According to a survey conducted in the year 2001, nearly one in ten students had tried cocaine at least once in their lifetime. Some of them even confessed of having consumed the hard core drug cocaine during their last years at school. Titled as ‘Montana Youth Risk Survey’, it revealed some shocking realities to the policy makers and citizens of Montana. Situations are not very different at present and immediate steps must be taken to keep the burgeoning number of drug addicts well under acceptable limits.
Of all cities in Montana, Great Falls and Billings are known to have worst records when it comes to cocaine abuse. Among Native American reservations, crack cocaine has been found to be a severe problem. Cocaine is highly addictive and potentially dangerous drug that is usually sold at clubs, bars and rave parties. Youngsters gain access to drug peddlers at these common gatherings and police authorities find it very hard to nab the culprits because of little or no support from the drug users, party goers and even family members of drug addicts.
Club drugs such as ecstasy pills of MDMA are more popular in bigger cities of Montana. In past few years, club drugs have gained immense popularity in Great Falls and Billings city of Montana State. These drugs are considered by the youth of day as a means to generate an instant high. Students as young as 15 years have been reported to be consuming ecstasy pills and other club drugs at various clubs across the cities. Rave parties and even school parties act as breeding grounds for these activities.
Highest numbers of ecstasy abuse cases among school and college going students have been reported in Missoula and Bozeman. Other than MDMA, clubs drugs such as ketamine and ghb are not considered a serious threat in state of Montana. It is due to the reason that ketamine and ghb have not surfaced at a greater level in the state yet while ecstasy has become all too popular with growing number of possession, trafficking and drug abuse cases.
Throughout the state of Montana, marijuana is easily accessible to everyone who wishes to take a puff or two. People can be easily spotted around in parks, roofs and roads in different cities smoking pot. Even though marijuana is a lot less harmful than meth or cocaine, it is highly addictive in nature and its absence may provoke a drug user to try other alternatives. Most of the illegal marijuana trade in Montana is actually based in Mexico. Police authorities have nabbed several culprits in recent past trying to transport illegal consignments of marijuana from Medico to the state of Montana.
Medical marijuana in the state is flourishing with a number of people being recommended at a single healthcare facility in one day. State’s population has divided opinions on whether or not more businesses should be allowed to operate in the sphere of medical marijuana. While some people agree that medical marijuana is actually in the favor of citizens of Montana, few others believe that medical marijuana is promoting the drug abuse in one way or the other.
