Drug Abuse Statistics in Minnesota
The State of Minnesota lies in the Midwestern United States. It is the twelfth largest and twenty-first most populous state in the country, with a population of 5.27 million. About 60 percent of its ethnically diverse population lives in Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. Minnesota is also known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes and is home to a number of immigrants, particularly Asians, Africans, and Latin Americans.
It is the center of business and industry, transportation, as well as education. It boasts of a number of parks, forests, and entertainment spots, offering both locals and tourists a range of outdoor recreational activities. This has helped bring the State of Minnesota on the map of the world. However, this rosy picture has a dark spot in the form of rampant drug addiction in Minnesota.
The 2002-2003 drug abuse statistics in Minnesota paint a grim picture, with over 115,000 state inhabitants under the influence of drugs. It is even more startling to find that over 26,000 of these addicts are between 12 and 17 years; 43,000 between 18 and 25 years; and 47,000 above 26 years of age. Cocaine, marijuana, heroin, hallucinogens, methamphetamine, and prescription drugs are the most abused drugs in Minnesota.
It is found that methamphetamine is increasingly becoming popular in Minnesota, because of its easy availability. It is fast replacing cocaine as the most popular drug of abuse in Minnesota. The prime reason for the widespread availability of meth in that Mexican drug trade organizations control the illicit drug trade in the state. Statistics reveal that about 80 percent of the methamphetamine in Minnesota comes from California and Mexico. Even Minnesota Sentencing Guideline Commission statistics show that, in 1998, about 26 percent of the arrests were related to meth-related crime and 47 percent to cocaine-related crime. The reason for the rising statistics of arrests for drug-related crime is the tightening grip of the police around the drug abusers in the state.
In Minnesota, Caucasian males are the primary methamphetamine abusers, who administer the drug by snorting. Reports show that the number of methamphetamine arrests, seizures, and investigations has been increasing by the day. The price of meth has decreased substantially throughout the state, pointing toward the rampant substance abuse in Minnesota.
Besides Mexican drug trafficking organizations, local criminal groups and street gangs are to be blamed for the widespread availability of intoxicants and narcotics in the state. These local criminals are working in cahoots with international drugs gangs to produce and supply different forms of drugs. They are running illicit laboratories to produce drugs. This is evident from the numerous seizures of laboratories by DEA throughout the state, the number of which rose from 13 in 1995 to 38 in 2000. A number of meth labs have been seized in motels, farms, and homes, which is quite a startling fact. Some homes have turned meth hubs in Minnesota.
Minnesota narcotic abuse statistics indicate that the young population, in particular, is fast falling prey to drug abuse. The youth in Minnesota are fast abusing drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, meth, and marijuana. To make matters worse, prescription drug abuse cases, too, have come to the fore. Even the abuse of prescription drug is more popular with youths and adolescents, who get easy accessibility to these at home and outside. The Minnesota Department of Health is running the Meth Lab Program to raise awareness about drug abuse, share resources among people and different antidrug organizations, protect endangered children and provide equipment, training for the at-risk staff and first responders. A voluntary program in the form of the Minnesota Meth Watch Program is taking steps to restrain the suspicious trade and theft of general household goods used in the unlawful methamphetamine manufacturing.
Minnesota state law does not allow these substances to be sold to under-18 year olds and that sellers of these products must be pharmacists. A number of drug rehab centers are working in Minnesota that focus on specific addictions and their treatment options. They first concentrate on detox to remove every trace of drugs from the body of the addict. The rest of the treatment varies depending on the requirement in every case. These rehab centers have taken the onus to bring down the number of addicts in Minnesota.
