Substance abuse in Michigan
The state of Michigan gets its name from the French adaptation of the name for great lake and is also located in the Great Lakes Region. It is the eighth most populous state in the country and has one of the longest freshwater shorelines in the whole world. The state has a large number of water bodies and is also an automobile hub for the country.
Popular nicknames of the state include the Automotive State, the Lady of Lake and the Wolverine State. The capital of the state is Lansing and the largest city is Detroit. The state is made entirely up of 2 peninsulas and has a large ownership of recreational boats among its citizens. The city is one of the major hubs of automotives and has also a large number of music events that take place here every year.
The problem of substance abuse in Michigan exists as one of the major social issues and has large scale implications on the youth in the state. Popular drugs that are available in the state are heroin, cocaine, MDMA, crack and marijuana. The drugs in the state come from a large variety of locations, which is mostly due to the larger number of ports in the state that see trade through sea routes.
The presence of Mexican DTOs is also fairly high in the state. Most of the heroin and cocaine that is available in the state comes from Mexican trafficking organizations which also have ties with Columbian trafficking organizations. The presence of international varieties of heroin and cocaine from as far as South East Asia is also known in the state. Marijuana comes from Canada across the border and also from Mexico. There is a fair amount of marijuana that is grown in the state and nearby areas.
Cocaine and cocaine crack contribute for a fair amount of the drug addiction in Michigan. The state has many DTOs that supply cocaine and cocaine crack into the city. There are many wholesale distribution and selling units that have been found in the state on previous occasions.
The problem of substance abuse in Michigan related to cocaine and cocaine crack is also a problem that has high relations to crime rates. It is known that crack addicts commit petty crimes like thievery and armed robbery mainly for financial burdens that are needed to support their addictive tendencies. The problem does not stop with just simple addiction as heroin addiction is mostly recurring and rehabilitation is extremely difficult even though the state has taken large scale measures to fight the problem of drug addiction in Michigan because of heroin.
MDMA or ecstasy as it is also known is also a major problem when it comes to substance abuse in Michigan. Most of the MDMA that comes into the state is shipped from the northern areas of Canada. The existence of many trafficking organizations has also brought international varieties of drugs into the state.
The state has an active scene of parties and clubs all year round which also do not help issues as party and club drugs are also very popular in the state. Drugs like LSD, PCP, GHB are also widely found in the state and are also popular among the college youth in the state. Substance abuse in Michigan is also composed of a large number of addicts who are using a lot of these drugs other than people who recreationally use party and club drugs.
Marijuana is also a popular drug in the state as there are many sources of marijuana that come into the state. Mexican marijuana is the most popularly found variety of marijuana along with Canadian marijuana also popularly known as BC BUD which is a more potent variation of the marijuana that is found in the state of Michigan.
Substance abuse in Michigan for marijuana is exceptionally high among teens as it is very easily accessible through a street network of drug dealers belonging to not only Mexican DTOs but also Asian and South American DTOs. Marijuana is often considered a starter drug for people because the regular users of this illicit substance get into more serious drugs. Marijuana users have also high tendencies to alcoholism throughout all age groups.
The problem of alcoholism in the state is mostly among the age groups of 18-21 and 32-37 years. Binge drinking has been observed among college students as a frequent practice during holidays and events that take place in the city. The city also has a high rate of DUIs; which are mostly alcoholics and users of marijuana.
Alcoholism has also been observed to have high tendencies to violent crimes. Most violent drug crimes in the state are due to serious drugs like heroin, cocaine, cocaine crack and alcohol; in that order. The tremendous pressures on the students to fall prey to drug abuse in Michigan has been well identified by the state administration and the setting up of counseling cells and rehabilitation centers.
The cities in the state have also started a large number of community drives to educate the public on the issues that are cornered alcoholism and drug addiction in Michigan. Though the problem has seen a decline over the last five years, there is still a long way to go with regards to completely eradicating the problem of drug abuse in Michigan.
