Identify The Problems Of Meth Addiction At Drug Rehabilitation Centers

Methamphetamine is an extremely addictive stimulant drug that affects the brain and central nervous system of those who use it. Being a Schedule II stimulant, the drug has a high potential for abuse and is available legally only by prescription. To possess, manufacture or sell methamphetamine in any form is illegal and will result in criminal prosecution. Most of the methamphetamines abused in the United States come from foreign or domestic laboratories; production of meth endangers the lives of people in the lab and surrounding neighborhood.

The immediate effects of meth use even in small amounts can include increased wakefulness and physical activity, decrease in appetite, a “rush” or intense sensation, increased attention, decreased fatigue, euphoria, increased respiration rate and hypothermia. Meth use has toxic side effects and causes extensive damage to the nerve terminals in the dopamine receptors of the brain. High doses of meth can elevate the body temperature to dangerous and sometimes lethal levels and cause the user to have convulsions. Meth rehab can help a person overcome the grips of methamphetamine addiction and get on the road to recovery.

The long-term effects of meth abuse result in many damaging side effects, which include addiction. Meth addiction is a chronic disease which is characterized by compulsive cravings and drug-seeking behavior. In addition to becoming dependent on meth, chronic use leads a user to exhibit symptoms which can include violent behavior, severe anxiety, mental confusion and bouts of insomnia. Additionally, a meth addict can also display psychotic features which include paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances and homicidal or suicidal thoughts. Meth is a dangerous drug, going through a program available at rehablitation center for meth addicts allows a user to identify the problems of addiction and work through the many issues surrounding the problems.

When a person is a chronic user of methamphetamine, a tolerance can develop rather quickly. A person with a high tolerance to meth needs to take higher doses, more frequently, or change the method of drug intake to meet the needs of the addiction. While binging on the drug, a user will go through periods of insomnia and abstaining from eating for several days until the drugs run out or the person is so confused the drug use is discontinued. This type of behavior is very dangerous and requires the assistance of qualified experts working in rehab centers for meth before it is too late.

Though there are no physical manifestations of withdrawal syndrome when meth use is discontinued, there are several withdrawal of meth symptoms which can occur when a chronic user stops taking meth. The symptoms can include depression, anxiety, fatigue, paranoia, aggression and intense cravings. Scientific evidence suggests that as much as 50% of the dopamine producing cells of the brain can be permanently damaged after prolonged exposure and use of meth. In addition to the withdrawal of meth symptoms experienced when meth is chronically used, there are other serious side effects that can occur with prolonged methamphetamine use.
