Substance abuse in Maryland
The state of Maryland is located in the Mid Atlantic in the United States and is among the most prosperous states in the country. The state has won the honor of having the highest per capita income among all other states. It is a major center for research and development in the country and the world with its numerous biotech labs and companies. The state is also well known for its diversity and has the distinction of being called ‘a Mini America’.
Owing to its location on the strategic Mid Atlantic region, it was a land that saw some early settlers from Europe. The largest city and the capital of the state is Baltimore, which is a major port even today. The state has one of the lowest rates of poverty for all of the United States and unemployment rates are also fairly low at around 7%. The state’s economy is based more in the tertiary services and transportation is a major economic activity of significance for the state.
Substance abuse in Maryland is centered on two major metropolitan areas. The Baltimore area is a major transit zone for drugs to different parts of the country and the state also has many important interstates that see frequent drug trafficking. The suburban counties that are in the southern part of the state also see a fair amount of drug traffic mostly due to the city of Washington DC. Heroin trade is especially high in the northern part of the state as internationally trafficked heroin comes into the city of Baltimore. The city has had a reputation for being one of the worst heroin affected areas in the state.
Biggest concern of drug abuse in Maryland has to be heroin. Even though it is available throughout the state it has its major center around the seaport of Baltimore. The availability of high grade heroin in the city has made the region one of the worst affected by heroin abuse.
Heroin addiction has a high tendency to violent crime and users are also known to suffer from the psychological effects of heroin addiction long after they are admitted and rehabilitated. The high percentage of heroin abuse in the Baltimore metropolitan area is a major concern for drug enforcement agencies in the state. Recent studies have revealed that there is a lot of high grade heroin that is available to youth between the ages of 15-21.
Cocaine and crack also significantly contribute to drug addiction in the state. The trends toward the use of cocaine are more common in the southern parts of the state. Washington DC serves as a major supply destination for cocaine and crack. Existence of gangs and trafficking organizations has also seen high tendencies of violence and other crimes related to cocaine abuse in the state. Studies in recent times have indicated that the demand and supply of cocaine has gone down by a large extent. Speculations continue to float on whether the demand has actually decreased or are just a bid by traffickers to raise prices.
While figures of substance abuse in Maryland do not indicate methamphetamines as a major problem, the rise of meth related incidents since 2007 has raised some concerns. There have also been reports about the existence of meth labs in the western parts of the state and increasing supply from the southwest has raised doubts over this assessment. The problem of methamphetamines is surely a serious one that the state is trying hard to fight and prevent its spread. Meth is among the most dangerous drugs and is a leading cause for instant drug addiction.
Marijuana is the most widely available drug in Maryland. It is abused throughout the state and is also easily available in all parts of the state. Substance abuse in Maryland has increased because there is also a large amount of marijuana that is grown in the western parts of the state. High grades of Mexican and Canadian marijuana are available in the major metropolitan areas while domestic supply is high in suburban areas of the state. Drug addiction in Maryland can also be traced to this fact that there is a large population of the state that has access to marijuana which is considered a starter drug for more serious addictions.
Party and club drugs also form a large chunk of figures for drug addiction in Maryland. Even though the culture for party and club drugs like LSD, PCP, and MDMA is primarily based in the northern areas around Baltimore, the gradual spread of such drugs is a noticeable trend in the state. The existence of a healthy rave and nightclub scene in the city of Baltimore is a major concern in this area. More than 60% of the people who are admitted to the use of party and club drugs belong to the age group of 18-21 years which is a grim and disturbing statistic.
Prescription drugs also constitute a good fraction of substance abuse in Maryland. It has been identified that oxycodone products are the most significant threat with regard to prescription drugs. Most of the drugs are available through illegal sale which is sadly done by some of the health care professionals in the state. Forged prescriptions are also found in the hands of teenagers who dangerously experiment with prescription drugs.
It has also come to the notice of enforcement agencies that alcohol is used frequently with many prescription drugs which can cause some deadly reactions. Hydrocodone products, Xanax, methodone, Vicodin, and codeine are among the other common prescription drugs available in the state.
The state has launched many programs in the past to counter the problem of drug addiction in Maryland. Mobile enforcement teams continue to operate in some areas of the state. The state also has its share of rehabilitation centers, especially in the northern and southern parts. The problem of substance abuse in Maryland has been diligently fought by the state; some good signs have also come through as drug trends in areas like Baltimore and Annapolis have come down significantly. Drug addiction in Maryland continues to be a prominent problem that the administration is fighting with newer methods of social and psychological forms of treatment.
