Entering A Long Term Drug Rehab Facility

The abuse of heroin and cocaine addiction has become one of the most serious problems in the United States. In fact, it is more than just a drug problem. It is a disease of huge proportion that if not taken more seriously, will spill over into the next generation. As it is now, teenagers in school are experimenting with drugs so the trend is here to stay and it is a frightening thought.

The reason why it should be considered a disease is because it affects people in a physical and mental capacity. A detox process should be the first thing implemented when the drug addict enters a long term drug rehab facility. Of course, this process will take a few months if the person has been on drugs for many years.

This constitutes a severe case of drug abuse where the individual cannot go one day without taking drugs. It has become a habit, a way of life and their very existence. Inpatient care is recommended for individuals that fit this description.

For someone who is having a hard time kicking their drug habit, long term care is the ideal situation. Most rehab centers have their right tools and resources to deal with these situations. In fact, they are able to provide in house treatment programs that are of the highest standard and quality.

All rehabilitation centers do have professional staff working to make sure that residents are taken care of and follow the structured program that is implemented for them. A doctor has to be present to administer the detoxification process. Doctors know the importance of detox and not until a person is detoxed can they enter into the rehabilitation process. They have to get all of the drugs from their bodies. The withdrawal symptoms can be particularly difficult, but the medical doctor will help the drug addict to get through the process.

The time that the recovering drug addict spends in the long term drug rehab center has to be productive and structured. When the person enters the program, they are briefed on the rules, regulations and guidelines that they will have to follow. They are also required to participate in all of the activities that are related to their care.

Group therapy is important because it affords them the chance to meet other drug addicts and form new friendships and support for their journey out of drugs. Individual therapy is also vital because it addresses specific concerns such as what caused the behavior in the first place, what triggers the behavior and how to successful stop it.

These therapy sessions can be very intense and does require concentration and patience on both the part of the individual as well as the therapist or counselor. The recovering drug addict will be able to see their family members on a regular basis. In fact, sometimes, family therapy that includes the recovering addict is recommended.

The recovering drug addict will learn how to communicate more effectively and group therapy does help with learning interpersonal skills and offers essential communication tools.

Sharing their own stories individually gives each drug addict a chance to realize the problems that drug causes not only themselves, but the people that love them. They will face the guilt of knowing the pain that they caused their loved ones. This is not a punishment, but a realization.

Each individual admitted into a long term drug rehab facility goes in with absolutely no expectations, but soon realize the difficult process of getting the help that is needed to say goodbye to drugs. The advantage is all the help and support that they are afforded in and outside of the facility from other residents, family and friends.
