Kentucky drug abuse statistics are very astonishing. The sad thing is to know that the statistics are pointing to increased drug consumption by the day. Almost all cities in Kentucky are affected by drug abuse. The reason for this could be the open sale and availability of drugs in many parts of Kentucky. Since illegal drugs are easily available, anyone with the slightest interest in trying them out ultimately gets addicted to them.
As per a recent survey of Kentucky drug addiction held in 2009, over 17,000 people were found to be addicted to illicit drugs. It was shocking to know that this statistics showed most drug abusers were in the age group of 12 to 17 years. The survey also revealed that nearly 34,000 substance abusers were aged between 18 to 25 years. Additionally, the statistics brought to light that over 44,000 people who were dependent on drug abuse in Kentucky were over 26 years of age.
Marijuana is the most widely used drug in the state. Moreover, this plant based drug is grown domestically in Kentucky. Marijuana is majorly grown on national forest land. In 2006, about 557,276 marijuana plants were eradicated in Kentucky as part of the Domestic Cannabis Eradication Program.
Another drug that is highly used in Kentucky is heroin. Apart from this, Kentucky Drug Abuse Statistics also brought to light that methamphetamine production is also on the rise in Kentucky. This usage is especially high among teenagers. Kentucky Drug Abuse Statistics of 2009 also revealed that 19,427 DUIs were issued in Kentucky and nearly 231 people died due to intoxicated driving. Alcoholism, on the other hand, took claimed nearly 1,177 lives in Kentucky. Tobacco consumption in Kentucky caused the death of close to 6,035 people in 2009. And his is not all; 235 people died due to illicit drug usage in Kentucky, USA.
On a whole, over 202,976 people were found to be addicted to marijuana in Kentucky, while nearly 33,261 people were dependent on cocaine. Heroin consumption is also increasing in this state, with about 1,884 people being addicted to it in 2009. It was also noted that close to about 88,886 people were found to be abusing prescription drugs in KY in 2009, and not less than 8,479 people were using inhalants in Kentucky. Close to about 15,095 people were found to be dependent on hallucinogens as well.
