Substance And Drug Abuse in Kansas
Kansas sits in the heart of the USA and is the geographical center of North America. As a central state with wide prairies and grasslands and well fed large rivers fertilizing the soil, Kansas is a great agricultural production belt, known mostly for being a rural state that also has a rather handsome urban count.
Kansas is the 15th largest state in the U.S., with an area of 82,277 square miles of prime farming land. The total population of Kansas State is 2,818,747 according to 2009 estimates, making the state rank 33rd in terms of population density.
Kansas was once considered to be ‘flatter than a pancake’ due to its geographical terrain. The Great Plains lie here, yielding very grassy and rich soil which is great for crops of various kinds like wheat and sunflower. Such a landscape also doubles as prime cattle and sheep rearing terrain.
There was once a great migration of the rural population to the urban hubs of Kansas since the late 70s, and this was popularly known as the Rural Flight. This migration is prevalent even today, as people leaving farming areas often move to the cities and towns to look for better job prospects. Kansas also has some oil reserves, though the production of oil is slowing down gradually.
Kansas is dotted by some beautiful hills and forests to the east, but the land rises gradually towards the west. Rivers like the great Missouri and Kansas River flow in the northeastern parts of the state, while the major river to the south and west is the Arkansas River, which later breaks up into various tributaries.
Climatic conditions in Kansas also vary throughout the state. There are semi-arid grass plains to the south, where it is bordered by Colorado; then there is the humid continental climate to the north east, where the state borders Nebraska. The eastern part of the state has a tropical, humid climate.
Historically, Kansas was a hot seat of controversy during the American Civil War, as it sat between the Northern Free States and Southern Slave States. In fact, ‘Bleeding Kansas’ was a name the state had earned due to the bloodshed it witnessed at the time. Also, being a large part of the Native Indian nation, Kansas was always very conflicted when it came to issues of racial supremacy during the early days of settlement.
When it comes to substance abuse, rural folk rarely fall prey to the predatory clutches of narcotics to become drug abusers in Kansas. However, local methamphetamine production is also rearing its ugly head, and has now become a state-wide problem.
The Kansas State OD has discovered a new rise in local meth-labs that produce a cheaper variety of methamphetamine as compared to the purer Mexican version by using the ‘birch’ method and some restricted, legal or stolen components. Such centers are becoming more common, and since Kansas serves as a trade point for the transportation of narcotics to the further north, the sale and supply lines are all too accessible for these local production hubs.
When it comes to prescription drug abuse in Kansas, OxyContin seems to hold the most charm for abusers here. Drug abusers in Kansas take to OxyContin as it is cheaper and more easily obtainable, since online pharmacies and local drug stores can sell them easily. This is a far better option for those who resort to substance abuse in Kansas, as hard drugs often need to be bought from drug gangs, and this act tends to hold some risk. Other pharmaceutical drugs commonly abused are Alprazolam, Prozac, Valium, Viagra, and the like.
Marijuana, however, seems to hold command in Kansas. Cheap Mexican varieties are transported into the state via the National Highways I-29, I-35 and I-70. However, ‘Purple Kush’ or hydroponic marijuana seems to have a higher value and is regularly imported into the state, mainly from Phoenix, Arizona.
The Kansas State DO and DEA have continuously had success with raids and arrests of some major players in the trafficking business in the state, but with a huge concentration of major roadways and railways, it’s difficult to cover all the territories within Kansas.
Rural locations offer shelter to substance and drug traffickers in Kansas, while the urban hubs like Wichita and Kansas City continue to grow in the shadow of drug trade and trafficking, which are ‘businesses’ mostly dominated by the Mexican, Asian DTOs, and outlawed motorcycle gangs.
While there are numerous help organizations, rehabilitation centers, and counseling groups available for drug abusers in Kansas, just like any other state in the USA, the drug trafficking routes here seem to be a huge problem. Though the DEA and KSOD work tediously to keep Kansas drug-free, the vital agricultural products that are transported from Kansas often double as drug shipments, and such channels and streams of the narcotics trade seem to be flourishing.
In 2008, there were about 300 drug related arrests in Kansas, while 2009 witnessed a drop in this number. Though this fall is encouraging, the local authorities have a long way to go before drug abuse in Kansas finally becomes a thing of the past.
