Iowa Drug Addiction Statistics

The State of Iowa (IA) takes its name from the inhabitants surrounded in this geographical group. The capital of this state is Des Moines which is the largest city.  Iowa has earned name in the fields of biotechnology, processing, advanced manufacturing, and production in green revolution. With respect to area, Iowa is the 26th largest state in the United States. The geographical boundary extends from Mississippi River in the east to the Big Sioux River and the Missouri River in the west .The Des Moines River lies along the southern border. Of late, Iowa is in the news for rampant drug use.

There is a rampant growth in the usage of drugs in the State of Iowa. The urban cities of Iowa have been primarily affected by the usage of drugs. A number of drugs are widely available, which has contributed to drug problems everywhere. The 2001 police report showed that it accounted for 61.9% of drug convictions in Iowa. An unusual condition and behavior arising due to frequent use of drugs is called addiction of drugs. When a person becomes addicted to drugs, his physiological and physical health degrades. Drug addiction in Iowa is a cause of growing concern for all the people residing in that area.

Heroin seems to be the most abused drug by the people of this state. Mexican heroin is widely available in retail outlets throughout the State of Iowa. The majority of victims using Mexican heroin are from the urban cities of Iowa. Black tar heroin, of which Mexico is the leading producer, is supplied across the border by air as well as road transport.  Black tar is injected into the bloodstream. There has been a rise in the number of deaths for overuse of heroin since 2008.

Drug trafficking network has been reported recently by the police officials in the State of Iowa. The drug threats in the state of Iowa are due to Mexican drug traffic organizations. A number of criminal groups and gangsters are functioning in the central and the western provinces of Iowa. These organizations have highly defined control and the command structures take up the task of distributing complex drugs throughout the state of Iowa. There are specific market areas where all these goods are sold. The primary markets functional in these areas include Kansas City Metropolitan Area, Kansas and other high profile areas.

Drug abuse statistics in Iowa are a reminder that the situation is becoming grimmer day by day. Besides heroin, cocaine is the other drug being widely abused in Iowa. Cocaine deeply affects the brain. Even here, the Mexican border can be classified as a main access area of all these drug activities. Some of the local criminal groups collaborate with the international drug trafficking gangs to supply drugs throughout the area. These local dealers play a very important part in selling drugs on the streets. Apart from heroin and cocaine, meth is being rampantly abused in Iowa. Several illicit meth labs have been busted in the state, pointing to the growth of meth abuse. Club drugs, such as ecstasy, are popular with teens, which are openly used in parties and raves. The party drugs seem to be providing instant energy for drug addicts. These are considered the strongest stimulant.

Marijuana is another drug popular in Iowa. It is extensively used along with cocaine and other drugs. In the central and eastern Iowa, marijuana is used rampantly. A number of cases have been reported in which marijuana addicts have been found to be suffering from lung and throat cancer. A number of people regularly use marijuana and the use of marijuana among teenagers is the highest. Iowa narcotic abuse statistics show that many of the drug addicts abuse opiates.

To make matters worse, the rising incidence alcoholism in the State of IOWA is quite upsetting. Several cases of driving under influence have come to the fore recently. In order to check the rising drug trafficking, law enforcement agencies have initiated several operations. A number of raids have taken place on illicit meth labs and marijuana fields. Several illegal marijuana growers have been arrested in some cities of Iowa.

To reduce substance abuse in Iowa, a number of treatment centers have been set up. But the situation in Iowa remains almost the same because the addicts not only involve adults, but also teenagers, who are easily exploited by drug dealers. What’s more, the abuse of prescription drugs in Iowa is also rampant. Teens and school students are the major abusers of prescription drugs, for they get easy access to medicated drugs at their homes.

 Various measures have been put forth by the people in the State of IOWA.  The people here have come up with various schemes to lower down the usage of drugs. They are creating awareness by conducting health programs and forming support groups. A number of drug rehab centers have been established in all the cities of Iowa. 

The drug rehabilitation centers are specialists in providing various types of treatment, depending on the condition of the addict and extent of abuse.  These rehabilitation centers have counselors who look after the victims and provide them with counseling.  The main purpose of these rehabilitation centers is to bring down the number of Iowa drug abuse and to help people live a pleasant life.

Raising awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse is the need of the hour in Iowa or any other part of the country. Only awareness can bring down the numbers of cases of drug addiction in Iowa.
