Drug Abuse in Indiana
One of the major states in the U.S., Indiana has a population of about 6.3 million. It is interesting to note that, among the various states of the U.S., it is ranked at 17th for the population density and number. This state is a collection of many cities, most of which are metropolitans with very large populations. While one can come across smaller cities with no more than 30,000 people, cities with more than 100,000 residents are also very common.
Indiana is a centre for many types of economic activities, including agriculture. One of the major attractions of the state is the square-shaped farms located in Central Indiana. This area has been more or less reserved for extensive farming and related activities, and sees a lot of production every year. Apart from this, Indiana has a rich geography, with many rivers, lakes and other topographical elements providing the diversity that is much needed in any modern state.
The population mix of Indiana is predominantly in the favor of whites, with the black population forming close to 10% of the whole. The dominant religion is Roman Catholic, and consequently there are many churches built in the state. Also, the state has many avenues for education and commerce, as many of the famous universities and industries spring up from here.
It appears as if everything is fine in Indiana, but that is certainly not so. Like in the case of so many other modern states, advancement brings its own challenges. It seldom happens that change is wholly good or wholly evil for any demography. These days, it is the problem of drug abuse and alcoholism that is taking roots in the state. In most of the important metropolis too, there has been an unprecedented rise in the number of cases related to narcotic abuse and alcoholism.
What has been the cause of this steep rise is an important question. There can be no doubt about the fact that much progress has happened in the state of Indiana in the past few years. As of today, it stands as a towering example of development and foresight. Many new trades and businesses have now opened up in Indiana, giving rise to the standard of living. Surely, people now have more incomes, and thanks to the culture of consumerism kicking in, are also more than happy to spend.
Another very important aspect about the whole thing is that most of these cases relate to youngster and children. This is a particularly worrying part because it shows that children are getting stared in this destructive habit at a very early age, which can only mean trouble for the state in the long run. The loss is also in terms of skill, because due to the drug habits, the children are missing out on a chance to complete a good education and carve a career for themselves. One needs only to visit the bars in the state to see that alcohol is being served freely to everyone, without much regard to age and legal issues.
The fight against this social evil will be a long one. One can’t expect a change to occur overnight. While it would be an armchair optimist’s pipedream to hope for a drug-free state, it doesn’t mean that efforts can’t be done towards curbing this evil. The administration is very serious towards doing something constructive to weed out this niggling issue. Recently, there was a lot of awareness campaigns organized to make sure that the people become cognizant about the severe harmful effects of the drugs. The schools, colleges, and other organizations were also involved in this.
The response of these campaigns has been very encouraging. It was in very large numbers that people turned up to attend the various programs and seminars, and there was a lot of enthusiasm about the whole issue. One only hopes that the corrective effects of such efforts will start showing up in due time and that the problem of substance abuse will be under control before long. It is no secret that the drugs can do untold damage to the body and mind of the person who falls for their trap.
It is also interesting to note how the drugs find their way into the state. Since selling drugs is illegal, they mostly get smuggled from across the border. A very vast and dangerous network is operating to make this possible, especially because of the money involved. Once the drugs are in, they change hands and reach the locals, who are heavily involved in peddling drugs. The demand comes if from the locals who are out to try something different and have a good time, or from regular tourists and business travelers who need their routine dose.
While the locals are getting into the trade for the easy money, it is not a good situation to be in. For one thing, drug peddling is illegal, and if one is caught in these activities, his/her life will be effectively spoiled for all time to come. Also, the trade is itself fraught with many perils, as use of violence and force is not uncommon in the world of drugs and narcotic substances. As such, it is only a grave danger to one’s life, profession, safety, and family.
But if you do know someone who has fallen into this trap and is struggling to come out of the web of drug abuse, there is a lot of help available in the form of rehabs and treatment centers in Indiana. The good thing is that there are many credible and reputed rehabs, which have already treated many people of this habit. All one needs to do is realize that help is needed, and be ready to improve his/her life through personal efforts. These rehabs also offer customized treatments; which means that if you don’t want to go for an in-house program, you are free to do so.
For any person trying to get life back on track after the unpleasant episode with drugs, rehabs certainly offer a very good choice of treatment.
