Drug Abuse & Alcoholism in Illinois
The state of Illinois is the most populous state in the Midwest and has a very diverse population distribution. The state has often been called a mini America by many; primarily because the state is a heady mix of cities that represent the industrial and the agricultural equally well. The state of Illinois was established in the 1800s and has made significant contributions in American history.
The official state slogan is ‘Land of Lincoln’ and the state has made it a pride for itself by being home to one of the most influential people in shaping the country as a whole. The state has rich agricultural lands as well as a heady share of industry. The manufacturing industry in the state is among the largest in the nation and the state has also given a large amount of contributions to the field of energy. The state also has a rich history of contributions in the field of sports and has many names in the world of sports that are well known all over the world.
Illinois has a problem of drug abuse and alcoholism that exists due to the presence of many mafia controlled drug organizations. The city of Chicago is one of the largest distribution centers in the entire Midwest as it has a strategic geographic location and easy transportation mediums. The issue of drug related violent crime is one of the largest ones that the state administration has to deal with.
Drugs from all over the world are found on the streets of most prominent cities in the state and continue to flourish despite the efforts of drug enforcement agencies and the state police. Cocaine from Mexico, Columbia and even from certain parts of South Asia is available on the streets of most cities and continues to be seen as the major threat in the region in cities. The rural areas of the city have a high supply of methamphetamines which is especially prominent in the southern and central areas of the state.
Cocaine seizures up to the scale of metric tons have been made along the border areas of the state and the city of Chicago continues to be the major hub of the drug activity. Since 2007 however there has been a steep decline on the availability of cocaine in areas close to Chicago, which is mostly due to the formation and operation of the CFD (Chicago Field Division).
There are concerns that there is enough cocaine that is smuggled into the state and that the trafficking groups may just be holding it back to raise prices. Heroin is freely available in the state and has the unique distinction of being the only American state which is supplied with all four major varieties of heroin. Drug admissions due to heroin are the highest in the state as heroin is one of the most dreaded drugs. Drug addiction in Illinois has a large distribution in terms of users of a particular type of drug.
The state also faces a large methamphetamine problem. As already mentioned the most affected areas in the state are along the southern and the central regions of the state. This area has rural and suburban suppliers of the drug to the people. The large quantities of meth that is smuggled in through California and Mexico are a concern for the state authorities. The existence of meth labs even within the state has been a greater concern though because of the fact that meth labs such as these are hard to locate. Club and party drugs are also available in the state and comprise of a large faction of drug abuse in Illinois. The city of Chicago has the widest menu in terms of the different party and club drugs that are available.
Mexican and other international trafficking organizations have a big hand in the supply of such drugs into the state. MDMA, GHB, Ketamine and PCP are the most prominent club drugs that are available in the city. The DEA and the CFD are waging a war against substance abuse in Illinois and have managed to cut growth rates by significant numbers in recent years.
The exposure of youth to drug abuse and alcoholism in Illinois is also a major concern for the state officials. The easy availability of all drugs in ample supplies has made things hard as the youth have easy access to dealers on the street. Marijuana is the most widely available starter drug for the young in Illinois. Binge drinking which leads to major alcoholism has also been seen among college students. Drug abuse and alcoholism are also the reason for the maximum number of DUIs in the state and what is really worrying is that more than 40% of all DUIs are student DUIs.
Drug addiction in Illinois is not a recent problem and the state has been fighting against it for a long time. There are many state of the art rehabilitation facilities throughout the major cities in the state. Substance abuse in Illinois has shown stagnation in growth in major urban areas but the increase of admissions from rural areas is a concern. Even figures of the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs have seen a decline in growth even though the number of admissions related to prescription drugs has not gone down significantly.
The existence of a money laundering racket throughout the state and particularly in the city of Chicago has been seen as a growing problem related to drug trafficking. There are about 19 drug courts in the state of Illinois and some more in the planning stages to help effectively tackle the problem of substance abuse and drug addiction.
Drug addiction is not just a criminal problem but also a social one and the state has taken many steps to help the general population come to terms with drug addiction. Efforts are up on all fronts to help deal with issues of alcoholism and drug addiction in Illinois and common efforts of the state and the DEA are being seen.
