A human being depends on many vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy, when vital elements in the diet are missing a person's body will not be able to manage and it can lead to many different illnesses and negative consequences. When a person becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, the disease of addiction controls every aspect of the individual's life and never is it more evident than seeing the effects of chronic substance abuse. Someone that has been abusing drugs and alcohol can suffer many different health complications and just by the person's appearance it is easy to see how sick the addiction has made them.

Transformations Treatment Center knows that in order to help someone become clean and sober, it involves healing the psychological and physical aspects of addiction and part of this includes addressing the importance of nutrition and fitness. In a recent medical study conducted, researchers found that approximately 60% of subjects engaging in chronic substance abuse were suffering from multiple forms of malnutrition. Many addicts will have a weakened immune system, poor food and liquid consumption, disturbance of social and family network and females seem to be more at risk than males, and these individuals are in desperate need of our help.

Taking all of these statistics into consideration, in order to restore the health of our clients, Transformations Treatment Center employs a Registered Dietician and a personal trainer. Most other treatment programs use a Nutritionist which is very different than a Registered Dietician, but most people do not understand the major differences. A Nutritionist has neither concrete definition nor educational requirements, while a Registered Dietician is credentialed just like a Registered Nurse. In order for an individual to become a Registered Nutritionist it requires a Bachelors Degree in Dietetics, an internship of at least 900-hours and taking and passing a specialized examination, in addition a person must also complete 50-hours of Continuing Education Credits every five years to maintain licensure.

Our Registered Dietician knows a vast array of knowledge about the science of nutrition and knows how to interpret and apply research studies when counseling our clients about the importance of improving lifestyle and health. The importance of a Registered Dietician is something that separates our treatment program from others and allows us to provide a high level of care and excellence for our clients. The job of a Registered Dietician is to evaluate the clients medical history, medications, weight, eating habits, exercise routine, current symptoms, and drug and alcohol usage and formulate a plan to help the individual make safe and effective lifestyle changes to achieve optimal health.

Because the nutritional needs of a recovering addict will be unique, it requires the expertise of a Registered Dietician. Anybody at all can claim to be a Nutritionist, but without having an educational background which includes food and nutritional sciences, foodservice systems management, economics, business, culinary arts, computer science, communications, sociology, microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, anatomy and chemistry, the care a client receives would not be beneficial. We employ a Registered Dietician on staff because we strive to provide the highest level of care available and giving our clients this vital service is just one of the many reasons why our clients have a better success rate.

The food we eat supplies energy and are the building blocks needed to replace damaged cells and is responsible for the nutritional requirements needed by the body to function. A person that is addicted to drugs and alcohol often do not eat the right foods and as a result, it limits the supply of essential nutrients and affects both energy and body structure maintenance. Drugs and alcohol interfere with the nutritional process by creating issues with digestion and the excretion, storage and digestion of nutrients. These issues are so complex there is no possible way it can be handled by someone without an extensive knowledge of the human body and its nutritional requirements, and this is not something a simple "Nutritionist" could ever deal with effectively.

In addition to providing our clients with nutritional support and education, Transformations knows there is much more to providing the foundation needed for a long lasting and permanent recovery. We teach clients about life skills which are important for helping the individual learn how to live a normal life outside of our facility. Our life skills classes teaches the recovery client about day to day living responsibilities, and helps the individual find employment and how to budget their income effectively. There are many facets to adjusting to living in the outside world and we firmly believe that a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things a recovery client needs to know and practice.

In addition to our Registered Dietician that will help provide a recovery client with an array of healthy dietary and lifestyle suggestions, our clients also receive membership to fitness facilities and the services of a personal trainer. Our personal trainer on staff helps our clients in the basic areas of exercise such as strength, endurance, body composition, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. We believe that it is of great benefit to our recovery clients to incorporate a regular fitness routine into daily life in order to strengthen the body, promote relaxation and alleviate feelings of tension.

At Transformations Treatment Center, we believe that the ability to adapt, change and heal from addiction lies within the heart and soul of each client. The needs of our clients are tantamount to our mission of help and healing, we take pride in helping our clients recover from addiction, find the path to sobriety and being able to live a healthy, productive substance free life. Our caring staff, which includes both medical and nutritional experts, is available to assist an addict in rebuilding life and adopting positive lifestyle behaviors, both of which are important to long term recovery. We know that overcoming an addiction to drugs and alcohol requires extensive rehabilitation in all areas of life and at Transformations, your recovery is our number one priority.
