Treating Addiction at an Alcohol and Drug Rehab

Long term addiction to drugs or alcohol takes a toll on your body and mind. A lot of research has gone into the subject and it has been found that long term addiction to cocaine and heroin is the hardest to quit. It is not an impossible task to quit using a drug like heroin but it is an extremely tough and difficult task.

What makes it tough for an addict to quit his addiction?

  • The withdrawal symptoms: Abrupt discontinuation of a particular drug that an addict has been using every day for the last few months brings in the withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can lead a person into depression, anxiety and can cause a nervous breakdown. These symptoms can also lead a patient into a suicidal mood and it becomes extremely tough for the patient to give up the drug all of a sudden
  • The craving: Physical and mental dependency on drugs is clearly visible when a person starts craving for the drug at an alcohol and drug rehab center. The craving reaches a point where the patient can no longer resist it and undergoes a number of behavioral changes. These changes are tough to handle and the patient experiences trauma and torture when the craving reaches a very high point.
  • The misconceptions about drugs: There are a number of misconceptions that addicts carry with themselves and use for justification of using drugs. A number of addicts think that doing drugs takes them into a world of bliss where they can finally experience peace of mind. Some patients believe that drugs are a way to achieve higher levels of spirituality. Such misconceptions force a person to stick to the usage of the drug. Once a person gets addicted to a drug, it becomes hard for him to let go.
  • Often patients start enjoying the world of depression that the use of a particular drug leads them into. These addicts have no desire to quit the drug as they find solace in cutting themselves off from the real world. Drugs help the addicts get away from the daily tensions of life.

The above mentioned reasons are the primary reasons for an addict not being able to quit addiction easily. However at an alcohol and drug rehab center, the patients psyche is altered and the patient soon understands that his reasons for doing drugs are irrational and not true. The bliss and the peace they were looking for in the world of addiction does not exist there. Instead they need to lead a sober life and focus on spiritual values to attain higher levels of spirituality.

One of the important jobs of the staff members is to bring the realization to the addict that being dependent on drugs is not good for them in any possible way. Once a person realizes the disadvantages of drugs, he starts recovering faster and starts concentrating on the tasks allotted to him. Carrying out the tasks allotted on a regular basis is the only way to quit addiction in a short span of time.
