Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in Newark

Located in New Castle County, Newark is around 12 miles west-southwest of Wilmington City. According to the July 2008 population reports, Newark is home to an estimated population of around thirty thousand residents. The total area of Newark is around 8.9 square miles and around 20 percent of the Newark population is under 18 years of age.

Newark drug abuse is not a big problem in the city, as the city authorities have taken sufficient measures to control drug-related activities in the city. During the early 2000s, the city was under the heavy influence of the drug mafia and the University of Delaware was the main focus of drug traffickers. According to the Newark DA narcotic abuse statistics, its proximity to Wilmington City is the main reason for drug addiction in Newark. However, the government started establishing rehabilitation centers at the earliest and nipped the evil in the bud.

Today, minor incidences of drug abuse in Newark have been reported, and rehab centers work in close association with the NGOs to help restore lives of addicts. Even the Newark Police Department has taken a strong stance on drug-related activities in the city, and every now and then, frequent raids are made to ensure that no illegal activity prevails in the city. The University Campus is kept under strict surveillance and smoking and drinking activities are strictly prohibited around the University Campus.

However, use of cocaine and heroin still prevails in the poor locations of the city. These drugs directly affect the nervous system and brain and eyes. Moreover, these drugs intoxicate the user to such levels that he may end up indulging in some kind of criminal activity, which might affect the social balance and communal harmony. Higher rates of violent crime are directly dependent on levels of drug trafficking in the region.

Substance abuse in Newark is kept under control by the various drug rehab centers spread all across the city. Some of them take care of particular drugs only, and depending on the symptoms of the patient, effective treatment therapy is suggested. Recently, the statistics reported that the crime levels of the Newark City have increased in the past few years and part of it is credited to the increased use of drugs in the city. The increased drug abuse in the city is because of the increase in the number of foreign students in the city. In many countries, prescription drugs, such as oxycontin, are sold over the counter.

Several Yoga, Meditation, and Concentration Camps have been started in the city, which help drug addicts in Newark control their internal craving for drugs and control their behavior. These camps are far better than any other rehab centers, because they do not force the use of external drugs to kill the desire but help them raise their self-control to levels that they do not feel addicted to drugs anymore. In nutshell, the drug control measures taken by the authorities have helped the city become peaceful and socially balanced.
