Drug Abuse in Delaware
Popularly known as the ‘first state’, Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution of The United States. Located on the shores of the mid Atlantic on the east coast, it is the second smallest state in the United States. The estimated population of the state is 885,122, with most of the income being derived from agriculture and the food processing industries.
Known for its many cities that provide excellent retirement options for the rich, real estate is now a booming business in Delaware. Some cities in Delaware are credited with the highest growth rates in the world. With an economy that more or less always outdoes the national average, Delaware is an upcoming state in many ways.
That said, drug abuse and alcoholism is a rampant issue in Delaware, and the administration has made excellent headway into treating drug addiction in the state with its highly acclaimed ‘three point rehabilitation’ program. Substance abuse still continues to be a growing problem, with most drugs being easily available throughout the state. Most of the trafficking that happens in the region comes from the Philadelphia street distribution networks and nearby New York. Since there are many interstate routes that pass through the state, it is a transshipment zone for many drugs to the bigger cities of Baltimore, New York, and even Boston.
The most easily available drugs on the streets of Delaware are cocaine, crack, heroin and marijuana. Drugs are available to people of all socio-economic backgrounds thanks to local dealers. More than 80% of the overall incarcerations in the state are related to drug offences. Heroin and cocaine are the most serious in terms of substance abuse in Delaware, while cocaine has been related to more than 50% of all drug admissions in the state.
Drug crimes are crimes that are committed under the influence of drugs, and in the case of Delaware, most drug related crimes can be traced to cocaine or heroin abuse. Wilmington in particular is a corridor state to many interstates, and has become a transshipment region for drugs to places as far off as Miami. Other than the city of Wilmington, Rehoboth Beach is also a hot zone for drugs during the summer months. A large number of pharmaceutical and club drugs are available to teenagers and college students in this area. The rave culture is also a reason why drugs are easily available to students and adults below the age of 30.
Methamphetamines were, until a few years ago, scarcely available in Delaware. However, the growing trend of this drug among partiers demands concern. Laboratory operators use readymade ingredients to manufacture meth. The ingredients of meth are easily available, as most are common household drugs found in medical stores. The increase of meth admissions in state and private rehabilitation centers is a cause of worry for drug administrators.
Diverted pharmaceuticals are also a major threat to the state. Substance abuse is made more prominent among teenagers due to the fact that most pharmacy drugs are easily available through street dealers. Drugs like MDMA and LSD are also popular among the partying crowd. College students face the biggest threat from psychedelics, as more than 35% of all drug admissions for the college going age group fall under the reign of party and club drugs. Drugs like GHB and PCP are some drugs that have been increasing the problem of drug addiction in Delaware.
Alcoholism is also an issue in the state. Binge drinking is commonly seen along the beach areas of the state. High school teens and college students are prone to alcoholism because of the party culture that exists in some regions. Adults in particular are prone to mixing alcohol with other drugs, which further adds to Delaware’s addiction woes. Of all drug overdoses that occur in the state of Delaware, more than half are caused due to the mixing of drugs and alcohol, and this also fuels drug and alcohol related crimes here.
Apart from drugs that are available on the streets, the rich easily gain access to high grades of cocaine and heroin. High society teenagers are prone to smoking pure forms of heroin. Pure South American heroin is available in the state, along with some Mexican heroin that comes in mostly from California. The increasing heroin trends among teenagers and college kids are an alarming fact, as heroin is the most dangerous drug in terms of addiction.
The most easily available illicit drug is marijuana. Mexican marijuana comes in from California and the southwest, while some Canadian marijuana comes in from the north into Delaware. The state’s freeways are a constant trafficking route to supplies in many landlocked cities in the nation. In some instances, marijuana is grown people in residential areas. The supply of weed is not restricted to any age group, as both students and adults engage in the smoking of marijuana. Adults, however, have shown a greater tendency towards long term marijuana use.
Rehabilitation is something that the state has done successfully over the years. The ‘three step substance abuse program’ has been very successful for treating drug addiction in Delaware. The three points of the program are the Key Program, the Crest Program and the Aftercare program. The ‘three step substance abuse program’ is one of the most aggressive drug rehabilitation programs that is undertaken on such a large scale anywhere in the country.
The Key Program is a more intensive prison based program wherein inmates who are drug offenders are kept away from the remaining prison population. The environment for the treatment of addicts is completely intensive to treatment. The second program, which is the Crest program, is more liberal and has residential centers for recovering drug addicts. This is a six month long program which has less intensive treatment. The third part of the program known as the Aftercare program offers post rehabilitation support to recovering addicts.
Since the rise in narcotics abuse statistics for Delaware is considered a serious threat by the government, the efforts of rehab programs here are greatly appreciated.
