Daytona Beach Substance Abuse Statistics

Daytona Beach is a prominent city of the Volusia County and boasts of a population of 64,211. Known for its moisture laden hard sand beaches, the city holds an important position on the tourism map of USA. In the year 2004, the place saw a total of 8 million visitors; needless to say, the statistics have increased phenomenally since then. The city also boasts of three universities and one college and this is why there is a large population of youngsters to be found here. In fact 17.6% of the population here is under the age of 18 years, while 16.6% people are between 18 years to 24 years. It comes as no surprise then that the city has a very youthful feel to it.

In the recent years, there has been a steady increase in the addiction of prescription drugs in the Daytona Beach area. Apparently a lot of students in this educationally rich city tend to consume drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin and hydrocodone. These students consider them to be study drugs and believe that they help them focus better on the task at hand. Other popular drugs on the same lines are Ritalin and Adderall which are commonly used in cases of ADHD. Sadly, all of them are known to be addictive, and rather than helping these students get better grades, they tend to ruin their lives completely.

While it is true that the students mostly stick to these prescription drugs, this is not to say that heroin and cocaine dont find their way into these colleges. The beach atmosphere is no help either when it comes to Daytona Beach, since both alcohol and street drugs are easily available here. All this contributes to an increased crime rate, and is the reason why Daytona Beach has earned the dubious reputation of being Floridas rape capital.

The extent of drug adaptation in this area is not limited to the younger generation, but in fact, a lot of office goers as well as retired people are also falling prey to these drugs. Some are prescribed the drugs as pain killers, while others consume it as a stress buster. Just a few doses are enough for the addiction to take over- and then from tablets to sniffing to injections, the situation keeps getting worse.

Since all of these drugs adversely affect the brain and the body, it is crucial that the addict seeks help for the situation rather than stay in denial. Sadly, most addicts seem to believe that they are in control of the situation and therefore refuse all help. In these cases, family and well wishers could try and organize an intervention too. However, it is best that the addict seeks treatment voluntarily.

Thankfully, the government seems to be rising to the occasion, and serious steps are being taken to establish and encourage drug rehabs programs of all sorts in the Daytona Beach area. Be it religious rehabs or secular ones, Daytona Beach offers it all.

Finding a Florida rehab can be challenging. It is recommended that a lot of research be put forth before you or a loved on make the final decision on which Florida rehab program you will choose.
