Crack addiction refers to an addiction to a substance known as "crack" cocaine. This drug is a derivative of "traditional" cocaine. Crack is a solid form of cocaine that people can smoke. It is typically made by combining cocaine with either sodium hydroxide or baking soda. Doing this solidifies the cocaine or "freebase" cocaine. The biggest problem with crack is that its content varies drastically. The crack you obtain from one dealer will not be the same as the crack that you obtain from a different dealer. This is because every distributor has his or her own way of cutting and mixing his cocaine supply and turning it into crack. Most distributors add an agent that will increase the crack's size to make the person with crack addiction feel like they are getting more of their drug of choice for the same amount of money (in reality, they are actually getting less because of all of the additives and cutting). Addiction to crack didn't become widely recognized until the late twentieth century. This is because crack itself did not start appearing regularly until the middle of the 1980s. It made its appearance primarily in the poorer neighborhoods of Miami, Los Angeles and New York. Over the last couple of decades crack dealers and distributors have increased the ratio of their cuttings. Now crack can be cut with powdered milk, sink cleaner or even worming medicine! It is because so many toxic chemicals are used to cut cocaine into crack that crack is more dangerous than cocaine addiction, thus leading to more cases of crack addicts who require rigorous crack addiction treatment which is available at crack rehab centers. Even though crack is a diluted form of cocaine, crack side effects are sometimes considered to be more intense than those of the pure form of the drug. People suffering from addiction of crack have reported euphoria, an intense sense of confidence, paranoia, insomnia, hyperactivity and increased energy level—all within five or ten minutes of consuming the drug. Because the drug wears off quickly, crack addicts must consume much more of the drug to maintain their highs. One of the major problems that people suffering from addiction of crack have to deal with is the permanent altering of their brain chemistries. The truth is that crack greatly changes the way the brain produces dopamine. It does not take long for the brain to become entirely dependent upon crack to produce dopamine at all. This means that when someone who is suffering from acute crack addiction says that he can't feel happy unless he is high, he is telling the truth. His brain does not produce the happiness inducing dopamine on its own anymore. Such conditions increase the urgency for crack addicts to undergo professional crack addiction treatment available at Christian drug treatment centers. This does not mean that the brain cannot be rewired to begin producing the drug again once someone has gotten treatment for his or her crack addiction.
