Alcohol and Drug Addiction Information
Imagine yourself floating high up in the sky and spinning around until you feel excited and dizzy with happiness; this is how drugs and alcohol make a person feel. There is no explanation as to why one person can use and abuse drugs and alcohol and never become addicted, and yet another individual only uses one or two times and becomes powerless to resist repeated use. Addiction can happen to anybody and has nothing to do with whether or not the person is good or bad. Someone can appear to have an ideal, happy life but underneath can be dealing with a drug or alcohol problem. The only way to permanently conquer an addiction problem is through accepting treatment and finally receiving the help so desperately needed.
Understanding Physiological and Psychological Addictions
A person may suffer from two different types of addiction, either physiological or psychological in nature. When someone is dealing with a physiological addiction, a person is addicted to and has become dependent on a particular substance, such as alcohol, illicit or prescription drugs. When a person stops using the substance of choice, the body will go through withdrawal symptoms in response to not having drugs or alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms can manifest in a wide variety of physical symptoms such as nausea, headache, vomiting, rapid heart rate, stomach pain, muscle cramps, mood swings and twitching. Tolerance is witnessed in long-term substance abusers and it means the body needs more drugs or alcohol in order to get high. It does not matter what type of substance has been used and abused, the most important thing a person can do is find addiction information about treatment programs and get enrolled.
When a person is dealing with a psychological addiction, the individual may or may not be physically addicted to a substance, but "craves" it. Psychological dependency is a mental or behavioral issue that drives the person to use in order to reduce stress or anxiety. A psychological addiction can include many different types and is not only limited to drugs or alcohol, but can also include sex, gambling, eating and many other forms of addictive behaviors. Despite the threat of the addiction impacting a job or other relationships, a person will go to any lengths needed to relive stress and anxiety, regardless of any negative consequences or outcome. Someone dealing with a psychological addiction will be driven much the same way as a physical
addiction, and when it has become unmanageable and taken over every area of life, the best way to stop it is through seeing the truth and agreeing to seek professional addiction treatment.
Professional Addiction Treatment
To successfully treat an addiction a person must be treated wholly, including body, mind and spirit. There should be a strong and supportive network in place, composed of friends and family members that truly care about the individual and can take an active part in the addiction rehab process through group and family therapy participation. When someone desires to end an addiction problem, the individual must be ready, willing and completely committed to seeking treatment and putting addiction in the past, where it belongs. People need to prepare for the chance of relapse, and be assured that setbacks and failures are part of the process of healing and recovery and should never be used as an excuse to give up.
One of the most powerful of all tools used in any drug and alcohol rehab center is the 12-step program. A traditional 12-step program requires the person admitting to being powerless over the addiction and that life has become unmanageable. It requires a person making a serious decision to turn life around and give the power to heal and recover to a higher power than ourselves. An addict must be ready to make a list of all the people hurt and wronged by the addiction and work hard to make amends and apologize. A person dealing with an addiction problem should seek out addiction rehab information and get enrolled into a professional treatment center.
From a psychological standpoint, a person must have a cognitive understanding and accept that they have an addiction problem. It is a necessary and integral part to healing and recovery. If someone is not ready to face the addiction head on and be proactive about recovery, no matter how good a treatment program may be the person will likely fail at rehabilitation efforts. Treatment changes lives each and every day. Once through rehabilitation an addict has a responsibility to wake up and face each day resisting and fighting the urge to use or drink, which is something that never truly goes away. A person will need to make a firm and dedicated vow to avoid putting themselves into situations which could trigger drug or alcohol abuse. Part of recognizing and avoiding triggers is adopting and integrating the skills and tools learned from going through professional addiction treatment.
The ability to recover is something that lies within each addicted person, so the individual must be dedicated to relearning how to live life without the benefit or aid of substance abuse. For a newly rehabilitated addict, coping in the outside world means putting the skills and tools learned in treatment to use and applying them on a daily basis.
