Half of the adolescent teenagers that live in the United States experiment with drugs and alcohol at some time during their high school years. This usually affects their performance at school and may also lead to their becoming addictive to the habit. Marijuana seems to be the drug choice for over a quarter of a million individuals that enter an adolescent drug rehab center. Some may think that marijuana should not be considered harmful since it is also used for medicinal purposes. However, even though this is debatable, marijuana does affect the brain. A lot of rehab centers specialize in treatment for those who use marijuana as teenagers. Counseling and therapy are the two selected choices of treatment. The primary goal for those who enter the rehabilitation program is to get them to abstain from the use of marijuana. Counselors at the drug center will help teenagers to be more productive and to overcome any health issues that the drug may cause. The symptoms of withdrawal are also an issue for teens and the drug rehab counselors are able to help them with that. Counselors understand that teenagers go through physical and mental changes on a continual basis and that they are very prone to being influenced by their peers. This also allows the counselor or therapist to better understand the teen's behavior more than the parents can. While growing up as a teenager, the relationships formed with parents, family members, peers and the community is of extreme importance to their development and staying out of trouble. Most adolescent drug rehab centers do provide programs that conduct extensive evaluation of the teenager who is undergoing drug issues. A medical exam has to be done as well as a psychiatric care. Parents are also asked to bring teens back to therapy after the end of the program to monitor their progress periodically. The immediate goal when a teen enters the rehab center is to plan for the day when they go back home to a normal life. What happens in rehabilitation? In some of the rehab centers, teens are required to do chores to keep them busy and out of trouble. Physical activities are also encouraged such as sports. Spiritual and religious activities are a part of some of the programs. This helps the teen to think more about their life's goals and purpose. Therapy is sometimes intense and may include music therapy or group sessions. Some teens that have not yet graduated from high school will receive tutoring and a strict academic program to get their GED. Teens that do drugs normally have grades that are declining and do not qualify for graduation. A teenager's drug use does affect the parents as well. Some of them undergo mental and debilitating health issues that result from the mental problems. Parents do not have to be alone in dealing with their teenager's problems. Drug treatment is available and provides an outlet for the teens to undergo detoxification of their bodies from the drugs that they have been abusing. A good treatment program will allow teenagers to live a decent adult life when they come off of the drugs. There are many teenagers that enter a drug program without having any clue of the expectations. This makes it easier for them to adjust to the treatment plan and program. It affords them a chance to change their lives for the better. |
